BAAN KHAO YAI

CONSTRUCTING AN ALTERNATIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT FALLS UNPRETENTIOUSLY IN LINE WITH THE LOCAL NATURE IS THE MAIN THEME OF THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN CONCEIVED FOR BAAN KHAO YAI BY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS 49.

The condition of the site prior to the construction was a complete soil slope without any trees. Therefore, in order to design a proper slope preventing soil erosion was a priority. The concept of the grading focused on the flatland around the house, designed as a functional space, while allowing for the remaining area to act as a suitable slope preventing erosion while also conforming to the architecture.

The planting concept was aimed at being low maintenance through selection of local plant species that grow well in the area such as Natal Grass (Melinis repens). Others such as Burmese Sal, Bestard Cedar, Burma Padauk, Indian Rhododendrom, Crape Ginger, Bandicoot Berry and Vetiver Grass were used to create a forest-like feeling.

The planning of the layout concept was developed according to the site’s context and surrounding environment and aimed to create privacy at the entrance road through the use of a boundary fence and a variety of tall trees while developing an open space within the area for a number of activities that further allows for the wind to flow into the house.

Private corners for relaxation house a large open deck and a viewing spot where it is possible to have campfires and connect the area to the parlor situated down the hill via a path featuring mild and comfortable steps as well as colorful plants. Natal grass is used as a main element for the remaining landscape with the addition of Vetiver grass at some areas in order to create a grassland atmosphere while, at the same time, preventing soil erosion and, lastly, allowing for a wide angle perspective at the parlor through the use of an open space at the front which is home to some shrubs that also act as a safety fence.
