CHANGE IS GOOD

Louis Rossetto × Erik Spiekermann

The world before the Internet is becoming a fading memory for within the span of less than two decades, the ways of life of every human being on earth have been completely transformed by the incredible progress of technology. Understanding the digital revolution through the study of history may grant us access to what has been going on in the world throughout different time periods, but it won’t be able to render the experience and mindset of the era of endless possibilities.

Louis Rossetto, the founder and former editor of WIRED, a magazine that was born as one of the infinite products of the technological revolution, wrote the novel titled ‘Change Is Good’ to depict the world during the transitional time of 1998 with a CEO, a journalist, an artist, a hacker, a baker and a drug lord being the main characters.

The book has Erik Spiekermann as both its designer and executive producer. The legendary and one of the world’s most influential designers may be best known for the many renowned fonts he has designed, or his book about the theory of typography that has become a bible of every graphic designer, but not that many people are aware that Spiekermann is also a former letterpress printer. He has developed the printing technique that combines old and new technologies by laser-cutting the plates before using a traditional letterpress method similar to that of Gutenberg and an ink specifically created for the book’s production process to achieve the resulting prints that are of a much higher quality than offset could render.

Change Is Good’s crowdsourcing campaign on Kickstarter ended with overwhelming thanks from backers, which is evidence to people’s passion for the irreplaceable feel of an actual book, still. And if reading from an iPad or Kindle were junk food like Rossetto metaphorically mentioned, the making of this very book would be the fine dining crafted by the hands and mind of a Michelin Star chef. Will the dish of such beauty and the ingredients of such high quality taste as good as it seems they should? All one can do for now is wait and see.
