CLASS CAFE BURIRAM

Up until this day, we’re not exactly sure which direction the cafe business will go in and what the growth will be like

but one of the things we’ve begun to see happening with the hottest startup businesses of the moment is how these establishments have evolved themselves to be more than just coffee houses, with the functionality of a co-working space or workshops being added into the program. CLASS Café is another example where an entrepreneur applied the aforementioned spatial model to the brand’s many branches in Nakhon Ratchasima. And when the time came for CLASS Café to expand outside of its city of origin, apart from a more diversified program, a distinctive architectural style was one of the tools employed to attract customers’ attention to the space.

While the initial brief of the project was to wrap the existing structure with a new building shell, such approach would have required the entire interior space to be fully air-conditioned, as the different additional programs would have become unified and less distinctive from each other. And for that matter, the 4 x 15-meter pavilion was constructed at the front of the project. The structure sees the presence of natural ventilation, following its ‘Sala’ (Thai pavilion) concept, which is an alternative the architect of SAR (Sake Architects) came up with to make the new addition of the cafe somewhat more interesting. Over 1,000 louvers made from metal sheets were used as the pavilion’s exterior shell. The 7.5-meter-height of the building not only facilitated great natural ventilation, but also attracts the attention of passersby commuting on Buriram-Nang Rong road. The new structure also serves as a transitional space that links the indoor and outdoor spaces of the cafe together while the elevated catwalk above the seats in the pavilion acts as a walkway that physically connects to the cafe’s multifunctional area on the second floor.
