NOWHERE

Over the past couple of years, the architectural creations from Stu/D/O that we have seen stand out for their distinctive style and aesthetics

such as the use of materials or architectural compositions where installation and methodology are deviated to render new experiences in the way that a piece of architecture is perceived and acknowledged. Their approach toward architecture is similar to the creation of a surreal illusion.

The firm’s latest project, Nowhere, is a restaurant on the rooftop floor of THA City Loft Hotel located at the entrance to Soi Ekamai 6 street. Using “stairs” as the protagonist of the design narrative, Stu/D/O facilitates the ambience for the restaurant, which corresponds with the paradoxical connection of the restaurant’s name and identity (No Where, or Now Here). While stairs are commonly perceived as a linkage, an architectural composition that stimulates a person to move his/her body from one place to another, the design of the restaurant sees the use of stairs installed into a series of playfully interconnected lines. Stairs serve different roles, too, from the composition of the sign and a shelf that leads one’s perspective toward the seating, to the communal tables, eaves at the outdoor terrace, benches or the counter bar. The lines run up and down, in and out, creating a surreal sense of space reminiscent of the Penrose stairs in M.C. Escher’s paintings.

If we were to think of architecture as a stage where performances take place, Nowhere is successful for its ability to stimulate users’ dynamic movements within the space with the casual vibe and upbeat electronic music serving as the backdrop. But perhaps it’s the limited size and functionality of the space that prevents users from actually walking or dancing on those stairs for the space would have, otherwise, rendered a more memorable experience if users were allowed to actually be a part of the structure instead of just looking in from the outside only as spectators.

(No Where, or Now Here) Escher
