INSIDE THE COCOON

The most recent urban development in the Ratchaprasong district, ‘Gaysorn Village’ is ready to take off

While we are not exactly sure when the trend actually began or by whom it was started, it seems like shopping malls and department stores in Bangkok situated along the skytrain lines have been vigorously attempting to create their own skywalks to welcome regular patrons and new visitors. What these structures bring to the city are commercial districts operated by owners of the neighborhood’s establishments, expanding their territories through the semi-public spaces that are created as a result while redefining their statuses as shopping destinations on the city’s map into something different. We’ve seen similar developments happening with Pathum Wan and Phrom Phong with the latest player of the skywalk game being Srivikorn Group, the major developer of the Ratchaprasong neighborhood. Bangkok’s longstanding shopping mall, Gaysorn Plaza, has been transformed into a new commercial district known as Gaysorn Village, housing a shopping complex, office building and public space within the new program’s 200,000-square-meter space. The transformation will affect Amarin Tower, one of Thailand’s legendary architects, Assistant Professor Rangsan Torsuwan’s most important works, which is located across the street. It remains to be seen how the design will find a way to compromise with the neighboring structure.

Before the beginning of Amarin Tower’s renovation in 2018 and the opening of the new skywalk which is scheduled to be finished within the next couple of years, a new building on Ratchadamri Road under Gaysorn’s expanding umbrella called Gaysorn Tower will emerge and is equally interesting. The 30-story building has A49 responsible for the office space while the other lobby of the office building situated next to the sky garden on the 19th and 20th floors and the 5,500-square-meter base of the high-rise architecture that will house a great number of retail spaces of many lifestyle brands is designed to be physically connected to Gaysorn Plaza. These particular programs have CL3, the Hong Kong-based design firm who is the mind behind Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands in charge of the design from the branding to the interior space. William Lim, architect and Managing Director of CL3 told art4d that the first major highlight of the design is the skywalk that connects the two buildings known as ‘Gaysorn Cocoon.’

Gaysorn Village

“The whole idea that it is a cocoon is to incubate ideas and then, hopefully, it will take off at some point,” explained Lim about the idea behind the program. In addition to the cocoon-like form that reflects the transformation from the old to the new, CL3 hopes for the space to serve as a source of inspiration and creativity, corresponding with the tenants of both the project’s office and commercial spaces where the majority of them are Thai brands of innovative and design products.

The word ‘artisan’ is employed as one of the design concepts through the use of unique elements and intricate details of Thai craftsmanship. By replacing the conventional white space of a shopping mall with wood and simplified details of traditional Thai patterns as the key element of the decoration, the space looks and feels more welcoming and friendly. ‘Porosity’ is incorporated in as another idea of the design. Lim explains the overlapped voids as an attempt to create a spatially and visually connected interior space, which when complemented by the curvy lines of the railing and the sporadic presence of the black steel of the joints on the ceiling and floor, is filled with a great spatial dynamic.

In most mixed-use projects, commonly found is a disconnectedness between the commercial and office spaces. The attempt to turn Gaysorn Village into a ‘microcity’ with a vast array of activities happening inside the program from work and retail to social areas is an interesting model. By putting spa businesses and services in the same area as the building’s convention center and a communal space including the rented offices located on the lower floors near the shopping mall, the design interestingly facilitates a new dimension as well as connection between the program and the lifestyles of its users. “Although it is not a very big mall area, we want it to be a very special experience,” Lim concluded.
