+LIGHTLINE

With the progressive development of technology that allows for people to communicate with the touch of a finger,

one of the most common problems are accidents caused by people’s lack of apperception for everyday life because the majority of modern mankind is busy looking at their phones even while walking or driving. But instead of campaigning for people to lessen the use of their phones, the city of Bodegraven of the Netherlands proposed the idea that, if such behavior could not be stopped or controlled, why not use design to provide a practical solution for the obsessive users. In partnership with HIG Traffic Systems, the city created +LightLine, a pedestrian traffic light that is installed on the ground, located at an intersection near the school district. The design team explained how gadget addiction has become one of the factors that caused the tram in The Hague to unexpectedly stop (in the Netherlands, trams run at the same level as the roads shared by cars and pedestrians while accidents have been somewhat common even before the rise of smartphones).

The solution can be viewed as straightforward or surprisingly clever, but there are a number of people (including those groups that are active in terms of traffic safety issues) who feel that the campaign doesn’t really fix the problem at its origin, which is essentially the behaviors of the people themselves. Not to mention how the campaign seems to encourage such way of behaving. The opinions from both sides sound equally reasonable but personally, we feel that it’s admirable for a designer to come up with a solution to this particular problem. It’s pretty much like the saying, ‘If you can’t beat them, join them!’

If you can’t beat them, join them!
