MOVING ARCHITECTURE

Daniel Arsham MOVING ARCHITECTURE

While one of the reasons that has made Daniel Arsham a household name, both inside and outside of the art community, is his many collaborations with celebrity friends such as Jay Z, Usher and Pharrell Williams (or even James Franco who played a part in his short film ‘Future Relic 02’), admittedly, his outstanding portfolio is why this American artist has been able to have such a successful career despite the fact that he’s only in his early thirties. And while Arsham’s educational background is directly in art, it has been his interest in architecture that dates back to the days when he was a student at Cooper Union that has caused his artistic repertoire, whether it be painting, sculpture, installation or theatrical design, to play with the distortion of architectural space. Arsham and two friends opened an architecture studio called Snarkitecture together (the studio behind the work ‘The Beach’ exhibited at Central Embassy in the middle of last year).

Arsham is currently having a solo exhibition at VDNH in Moscow. Titled ‘Moving Architecture,’ the show features a series of site-specific white sculptures such as Hooded Figure (2015) and Falling Clock (2011). By intentionally infiltrating the gallery’s space with the works’ presence, Arsham visually and physically blends the exhibited objects into the walls and ceilings of VDNH’s exhibition area as viewers are left perplexed by the undulating mass of the piece that seamlessly appears from the simple-looking while wall. ‘Moving Architecture’ will be on exhibition until the 8th of January 2018 in parallel with the 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art.
