After the feature of their story and projects in art4d last year, Sher Maker returns with the renovation of Sripayong,  a seafood restaurant on Chiang Mai’s Bann Ram Poeng Road.

The project is conceived from the owner’s wish to refurbish the kitchen space to be more organized and efficient. Once Patcharada Inplang and Thongchai Chansamak of Chiang Mai-based design studio, Sher Maker, started exploring the site, they discovered an excessive beam of sunlight in the restaurant’s interior space reflected from the massive concrete ground of the adjacent male dormitory’s parking lot. The amount and intensity of the reflected light reached the point where it became problematic for the restaurant’s business operation, particularly during the day.

The site’s condition becomes one of the project’s main challenges. The team eventually comes up with a solution, which derives from the idea of incorporating architectural compositions that can effectively filter the intensity of the bright daylight. The team’s attempt is to eliminate this particular obstruction of the project’s functional space takes place hand in hand with the revamp of the restaurant’s characteristic. The new element is also intended to redefine the project’s physical boundaries, and all the while maintaining the traces and identity of Sripayong seafood restaurant.

SherMaker decides on the idea of using black lathes, which function asthe façade that wraps around the entire functional space. The façade ends up creating new visual boundaries, which ultimately accentuate the physical structure and appearance of the restaurant. The details of the lathes and the elevation of the façade 90 centimeters from the ground together facilitate a visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces while at night, the space’s interior illumination brings the building’s presence to the fore. A similar approach had been executed with one of the studio’s previous projects, Lan Din.

With Sripayong seafood restaurant, Sher Maker still works with the same team of ‘Sala’– the local northern builders. Their interest in material experimentation is still reflected in this latest work. With Bann Ram Poeng being an area in Chiang Mai with easy access to old wood, the team agrees on using old wood laths. The material offers the dimension that is comparatively smaller than steel square tubes. With each lath’s physical features different from the other with its uneven surface and natural details of twists and bends, Sher Maker believes that the material can bring more interesting effects to the building than the square tubes at half the cost.

The decoration of the interior space keeps the same set of wooden furniture. The team chooses to polish and repaint the furniture to avoid any unnecessary replacement that would disrupt the familiarity of the regular users. Most of the circulations remain the same with only few adjustments made to better organize and systemize the space. What seems to be at the back of Sher Maker’s mind when it comes to designing an interior space is the facilitation of the kind of space that best corresponds with users’ understanding, simply because misconceptions can lead to disassociation and functional problems when the space goes through the actual usage
