GENDER IN SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART HISTORIES AND VISUAL CULTURES: ART, DESIGN AND CANON-MAKING?
20TH – 27TH APRIL 2019
Gender in Southeast Asian Art Histories and Visual Cultures: Art, Design and Canon-making?
The biannual art activity is initially conceived from an artist initiative whose aim is to promote the works of female artists from around the world. It also set off to consistently expand and sustain the female artist network although most of the interactions are something along the line of the kind of discussion one can expect from a group of friends of mutual interests and passion. The first exhibition, Tradisexion, took place in 1995. The project then went into a long hiatus after the Residency Program in Srisaket province of Thailand in 2008 before finally resuming its activity this year. We’ve heard that one of the main reasons behind Womanifesto’s return to the art scene is the rise of the biennale festivals that Thailand had hosted last year. This return is also an opportunity for Womanifesto to rethink their role and missions revolving the broadening of the art community’s mindset about ‘gender’. The exhibition will be held on 20th – 27th April 2019 at Design Center, Votayakorn building, Chulalongkorn University. The exhibition will also feature the lecture, ‘Gender in Southeast Asian Art Histories and Visual Cultures: Art, Design and Canon-making?’ and public event, scheduled to take place on 19th – 20th April 2019.
