ACROSS THE BORDERS- Grace Tan is a multidisciplinary practitioner specializing in the area of wearable and spatial structures. Tan’s experiments often blur the lines between design, art and mathematics. In recent years, her work has evolved beyond wearable fabric pieces into complex site-specific installations and spatial constructions while retaining a core method-based working process.
40 SOMETHING – Another big event from last year was Visionaries: 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through the Eyes of Photographers.’ This exhibition featured fashion photography and showcased the evolution of the industry through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
HELLO FUTURE – THE FAB MIND: Hints of the Future in a Shifting World takes on a broad aim not limited to tangible design products but focusing on the aspirations and activities of those who seek to understand and resolve social issues through design.
WISHFUL THINKING- Amanda Levete, the architect for the new extension at the V&A Museum, commissioned a sculptural, extendible fruit bowl to run the length of her 4.8m long table in the project called the Wish List. Amanda chose to work with Win Assakul after mentoring him during his placement year. The result is an exquisite piece that bears the hand of its maker.
SLEEPING WITH HISTORY- Situated on the bank of the Chao Phraya River and flanked by the ruins of what was once a massive trade city, SALA Ayutthaya is clearly of new construction, but the thoughtful design by ONION allows the resort to respectfully fit in amongst its ancient surroundings .
MESSY, FRIENDLY, HAPPY – bsides is a Japanese-Thai studio that took on the responsibility of renovating their partner’s family house. Overall, the look of the house seems to be a marriage between a traditional Thai house and a contemporary Japanese house. However, rather than creating a sleek, neat and minimal design typical of the modern Japanese style, the architects focused on making the end result comfortable for its users .
LOCAL CONDITIONS- The Slovenian/Serbian duo of Matija Berk and Vasa J. Perovic recently created a number of striking architectural projects.
