<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The rapid changes in technology that have occurred in recent years have created movements in many dimensions and affected many industries – including the design industry. The role of designers is now being challenged to break the traditional ways and to be able to respond quickly to various dynamics in recent days. In this exclusive interview, art4d spoke with Chi Yi Chang, President of Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) – the design research institute that founded the Golden Pin Design Award, an international platform that helps promote design from Taiwan and across Asia on a global scale. The significant role of TDRI is to promote and raise the standards of the design industry in Taiwan. In recent years, TDRI has shifted its role from a design center to a research institute that strives to push forward in applying the design to the industrial sector and society in an effective way.</span></span></p>

<h2><strong><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">art4d: As the president of TDRI, how do you align TDRI’s vision with current trends or challenges in the global design industry, particularly in Taiwan?</span></strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Chi Yi Chang:</strong></span> TDRI is the biggest design platform in Taiwan. Our main goal is to upgrade design to connect to the nation and the world. So, starting in 2023, we set up Taiwan Design Week as a platform to connect Taiwan and the global design community. So in 2023, Taiwan Design Week’s theme was Elastic Bridging, which referred to how Taiwan is a small island but is very flexible. This is why we can maintain the whole ecosystem, from design to manufacturing, even though we are a small island.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">But this year, of course, the big target is AI. Taiwan and the whole world are facing new opportunities and new challenges with artificial intelligence. Right now, AI can entirely change how society, industry and designers work. It is going to be a big challenge and also a big opportunity. As you know, Taiwan is good in technology, especially semiconductors. Taiwan also plays an important role in AI supplier manufacturing. So, we should use AI as an opportunity to encourage every designer to try using AI as a copilot or partner to explore the future. That’s why this year we are really focusing on AI. We have conducted two years of research and provide seven AI tools at the Taiwan Design Research Institute. In December 2024, we announced and provided those seven AI tools to every designer in Taiwan and our industry. This will help them understand how to use AI-driven innovation to boost efficiency and be more creative in the future.</span></span></p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">art4d: How does TDRI collaborate with designers and industry stakeholders to bridge the gap between research and practical design applications? </span></strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>CC:</strong></span> In 2020, the Taiwan Design Center was upgraded to the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI). This means we believe design should not only include promotions or exhibitions. Instead, we should have foresight and look to the future, but to do so, we need research capabilities. So, for the last four years since TDRI was founded, we built our research team to perform R&D. We currently have 200 full-time employees, and our forty researchers do a lot of research. This shows how design should be more or less like science or technology – it should prepare for the future. TDRI is a platform with a lot of collaborative projects with the government, as well as many joint projects with the private sector. We have taken on many larger-scale projects, and as we are a platform, not only can we implement large-scale projects, but also, at the same time, we can also do research. For those kinds of larger-scale projects, we always do research first. So, we have a lot of procedures to make the whole system much better for the future.</span></span></p>

<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">art4d: I can see that you have a very big and great research team working on numerous projects. But how do you ensure that the research can actually address the Taiwanese communities and aspirations? </span></strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>CC:</strong> </span>TDRI has been active in several domains since it was founded. One is design-driven social innovation, and the other is design-driven industrial innovation. The last one, and also the biggest one, is design-driven public service innovation. So, for the government sector, they find it very difficult to make anything new – any innovation. But for the past four or five years, we have actually collaborated with different ministries – Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Ministry of Digital Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and even the Central Election Bureau. We actually collaborate on real projects. We implemented those projects and also got really good results.</span></span></p>

This year, entries from more than 21 countries worldwide made it into the finals following a stringent selection process. The resulting roster featured 32 Golden Pin Design Award Best Design and 2 Special Annual Awards, alongside 3 Best Design winners from the Golden Pin Concept Design Awards, submitted by participants hailing from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Poland, the USA, Singapore, and, of course, Thailand.</span></span></p>

In the Spatial Design category—which deals with architecture and the organization of space—Thailand’s 1922 Architects, Hanabitate Architects, and IDIN Architects each earned an award. <p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another project that is appreciated for its straightforward concept is (beanroom) by Waterfrom Design (Taiwan). It accomplishes the owner’s challenging brief of simultaneously achieving sustainability and profitability by designing the storefront display around the phrase ‘Products as Decorations.’ The shelving is designed to be lightweight, serving as storage for colorful coffee-bean boxes under normal circumstances. When customers come flooding in to order coffee, the store’s exterior appearance begins to shift, and if all the boxes are pulled out, passersby can glimpse the ambiance inside the shop. Other notable details include a counter inspired by the creases of bean sacks and in-store shelving that can be adjusted to fit products of various sizes.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: sarabun-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Bridge Cocoon by Forest-Wood Archi-Tect. (Taiwan), the only bamboo-based architectural piece among the 2024 winners, is another standout feature. Bridge Cocoon uses a curved bamboo structure draped in treated fabric and bamboo paper, both waterproof and translucent, creating an atmosphere where crossing the bridge feels akin to emerging from a cocoon into the outside world. Also noteworthy from Japan are Kashimada Nursery by TERRAIN Architects (Japan), a kindergarten that employs an 8-tatami Japanese unit system to form a communal space under a windmill-shaped roof, and Redefining Public Restroom in the Park by Masatoyo Ogasawara Architects, a public restroom that provides seating to enjoy the view of Haneda Airport, housed in a structure that seamlessly blends modern style with traditional Japanese architecture.</span></span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The last two projects are the Beijing City Library by Snøhetta (Norway)—the ginkgo-leaf-roofed library in China that many have likely seen multiple times over the past year (also featured in art4d </span><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://art4d.com/2024/03/beijing-city-library">read more here</a></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">)—and Gaia by RSP Architects Planners and Engineers (Singapore) and Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects. Gaia is the largest Mass Engineered Timber (MET) structure in Asia, rising six stories high at Nanyang Technological University, where it serves as a learning facility, research center, and office space, complete with an additional underground parking level.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Taiwanese schools, aesthetic cultivation extends beyond classes and permeates the environment that students experience daily. One example is Hudong Elementary School in Changhua County, central Taiwan. This 80-year-old school collaborated with YUNGCHEI&YU Architecture to renovate its dim and enclosed rhythm classroom into a multifunctional and aesthetically pleasing space, dubbed the ‘Light Room / Roof’. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The redesigned room now supports a variety of activities, allowing students to learn, create, and display their art in a space that is open and filled with light. This area is also used by parents and community groups for gatherings and dance classes, making it a vibrant hub for both school and community engagement. The ‘Light Room / Roof’ revitalizes the school environment and empowers the school administration to promote aesthetic education, earning recognition from both Taiwan’s Golden Pin Design Award and Japan’s Good Design Award.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Light Room / Roof’s design centers on ‘minimal architecture, maximum activity’s functionality.’ YUNGCHEI&YU Architecture transformed the formerly dark, outdated room into a bright, versatile space. Originally, the classroom had a high ceiling, but later renovations added aluminum windows and doors that made it feel closed-off. To counter this, the team reworked the layout, storage, and lighting to create a flexible, open ‘blank space’ suitable for dynamic dance classes as well as for the static annual art exhibitions held by students every April.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">First, the design team replaced a low wall between the classroom and the adjacent hallway with retractable glass doors, connecting the space to the hall while allowing it to be closed off as needed. This enhances the room’s flow and extends the sense of openness between indoor and outdoor spaces.</span></span></p>

The classroom had previously been used for competitive sports training and storage, disrupting the sense of order and beauty. Hidden storage areas with push-to-open doors were installed behind large floor-to-ceiling mirrors, creating a minimalist space that encourages students’ creativity and imagination.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The ceiling was transformed with a ‘light roof’ concept, using a lightweight steel frame to hold metal mesh panels, track lights, horizontal strip lights, and provisioned slots for an exhibition rail and projection screen. This setup allows for flexible lighting arrangements, whether for spotlighting specific areas or illuminating the entire space, adapting easily to different types of events.</span></span></p>

These were replaced with vertical blinds, allowing students to enjoy the lush outdoor scenery while adjusting the lighting according to event requirements.</span></span></p>

To meet exhibition requirements, the design team created movable display cabinets with small rolling wheels, making it easy for students of all grades to reposition them. Additionally, the ceiling lighting is strategically arranged to create reference points for the display cabinets. This allows even younger students to use these light markers to actively participate in the exhibition setup process.</span></span></p>

The spatial design of the ‘Light Room / Roof’ encourages users to explore new ways of engaging with the space. As the design director at YUNGCHEI&YU Architecture explained, “The space can create connections with community activities, extending its impact beyond the revitalization of school spaces.” Moreover, the ‘Light Room / Roof’ has won several prestigious awards, including the 2023 Taiwan Golden Pin Design Award for Spatial and Integrated Design and the Good Design Award from Japan. This recognition has further heightened the school’s emphasis on aesthetic education, leading them to actively seek more projects related to aesthetics, with support from the local government.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The creation of the Sparkling Market was driven by the need to address the disorganized and outdated conditions of the original Hsinchu Fishing Harbor Direct Sales Center. The local government initiated a reconstruction project to provide vendors and visitors with an improved environment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Previously, the first floor of the direct sales center was dedicated to fish markets, while the second-floor housed restaurants, and the area was surrounded by numerous temporary stalls. The coastal area of Hsinchu experiences scorching summer heat and strong northeastern monsoon winds in winter, making it an uncomfortable place to visit.</span></p>

The original 13-meter-tall structure was lowered to 7 meters, resulting in a semi-open space. This allows both vendors and visitors to move freely and comfortably within a more spacious and airy environment.</span></p>
<h2><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Architectural Features Inspired by Waves and Sand Beach </span></strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The design of the Sparkling Market draws inspiration from the ocean waves, with the entire structure featuring a horizontally stretched, wave-like reinforced concrete roof. This form is not only visually striking but also provides excellent drainage during rain.</span></p>

In an innovative approach, the architects used concrete for the roof while cross laminated timber, typically used for roofing, in the walls, challenging conventional material usage.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Under the canopy, there are 74 standardized vendor stalls, each equipped with a sink, running water, and power outlets, providing a fully functional selling space for vendors.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Can taking out the trash be a fun and interesting errand for children? even become a part of life education?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Every day at 3 p.m., Taiwanese students begin a 30-minute ‘cleaning time’. However, no one wants to handle the trash and recycling. The typical trash area is a dark, remote corner of the campus, making it an unpleasant task. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Guang Wu Elementary School faced this problem with a makeshift brick-and-metal structure for trash and recycling. The space was dim, poorly ventilated, and lacked properly planned space for garbage, turning it into a corner of the school that students wanted to avoid. Additionally, to accommodate garbage truck access, the trash collection area was placed at the main entrance, which not only made the school’s entrance unattractive but also led to neighbors secretly dumping their trash there, which made it even more unappealing.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The ‘Design Movement on Campus’ project, a collaboration between Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, Taiwan Design Research Institute, and various schools, invited Meta House to redesign Guang Wu Elementary School’s trash area. They transformed the enclosed garbage collection area into an open, inviting space.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The new recycling area features a curved, transparent iron mesh structure with a roof, shielding against wind and rain. It also included elevated plastic pallets for dissipating the unpleasant odors by natural ventilation, and drainage systems for easy cleaning.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Incorporating green plants and blending the area with the campus greenery, Guang Wu Elementary School has transformed waste disposal into a more pleasant experience. The new space is no longer a dark, foul-smelling corner, but a scenic, vibrant part of the school.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The project, which integrates aesthetics with life education, is seemingly a simple design, but addressing critical pain points in campus spaces. It has been recognized for the Good Design Award from Japan and the Golden Pin Design Award for Best Design of the Year, the highest design accolade in the Chinese-speaking region. At the award ceremony, Meta House remarked “In this project, we broke boundaries by turning a recycling center into a showcase and even a teaching space. We took bold steps and are grateful for the school’s support. We hope to disrupt established mechanisms through design to create a beautiful learning environment.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The design team had engaged in thorough communication and understanding with the school during the research and design phase. They assessed historical trash and recycling volumes, and invited students to name the space— ‘Keep Clean’ (a play on ‘Porsche’ in Chinese, implying constant cleanliness). This approach empowered its actual user, with the name given by the students. The Principal expressed gratitude at the award ceremony, thanking the design team for transforming a problematic campus corner into an aesthetic space, linking people, objects, and the environment. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The ‘Design Movement on Campus’ Program goes beyond individual site transformations. It compiles these projects into practical manuals, detailing how schools and design teams identify and analyze spatial problems within campuses, and how designers use design thinking to replan spaces. This allows other schools to apply these experiences to their own environments. Integrating aesthetics and design thinking into campus spaces ensures that students can learn comfortably and enjoyably within their school environment.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">This year, the Golden Pin Design Award in Taiwan made a highly anticipated comeback. Organized by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in collaboration with the Taiwan Design Research Institute, this international design award, themed ‘Superload,’ presented a diverse array of projects that pushed the boundaries of traditional norms and limitations. It showcases each designer’s commitment to expressing their own distinct character and identity, which led to remarkable and inspiring results.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">A total of 8,000 works from 23 different countries were submitted, out of which 25 were selected as the winners of the Best Design awards. The awards were categorized into different fields, with nine projects in Product Design, eight in Communication Design, five in Spatial Design, and three in Integration Design. This year, the Golden Pin Concept Design competition has announced three winners of the Best Design awards and one winner of the Special Annual Award. In this article, art4d brings you some of this year’s winning projects that we particularly love. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: sarabun-regular; font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: rm-regular;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first work in the Integration Design category is the Taiwan Pavilion: Visible Shop by Serendipity Studio. This innovative design was featured at the London Design Biennale in 2023. The design of the pavilion symbolizes the story of Taiwan by incorporating numerous small mechanical parts. These parts represent the collective strength of small businesses, which play a vital part in the growth of Taiwan as a nation. The next project, Shibuya Font, is dedicated to transforming drawings and handwriting made by individuals with disabilities into typefaces and patterns. These unique creations can then be used to create a wide range of artistic and design works. The process also encourages the development of a strong network of collaborations between the design community, individuals with disabilities, and the government sector. Megaforce Company Limited created the 3D Vein Viewer Locator, a portable device designed to increase intravenous injection success rates, particularly in the case of accidents. The Morus Capsule 2, created by Morus Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., is a compact dryer that combines utility with a sleek design, making it a perfect home decoration item. The Pidan Wheeled Pet Carrier by Danke Co., Ltd. is an electrically powered pet carrier that combines a visually appealing design with an efficient ventilation function. This innovative product aims to make traveling with pets effortless and enjoyable for all pet lovers.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">The Spatial Design category winners include The Recycling Center in Kaohsiung Municipal Guang Wu Primary School by Meta House. This project successfully revitalizes the school’s interior space while educating children about waste recycling. Rongjin Gorgeous Time Park, designed by Atelier TimeScape, beautifully renovates the former official dormitories of Taihoku Prison. The revival of the old building through design and modern functions admirably takes the building’s integration and interaction with the surrounding community into consideration.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">There are two winning projects from Thailand this year. The first is <span style="color: #404040;"><a style="color: #404040;" href="https://art4d.com/en/tag/idin-architects-2">IDIN architects</a></span>‘ NANA Coffee Roasters Bangna, the cafe whose design stunningly integrates elements of nature into its architecture and spatial experiences. The second is the Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion, in which <a href="https://art4d.com/en/tag/chat-architects"><span style="color: #404040;">CHAT architects</span></a>‘s innovative adaptation of bamboo scaffoldings, traditionally used for oyster cultivation, conveys an interesting connection between architecture, travel, local culture, and the environment.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">One of the projects that particularly interests us in the Communication Design category is 1611 Magazine. Designed by Toby Ng Design, a Hong Kong-based firm, the financial magazine sets itself apart from others in its genre with a beautifully crafted layout that aims to make finance a more relatable and accessible topic. The logo showcases the number 1611, which represents the birth year of the Dutch East India Company, the world’s first stock market. The details of the logo’s design are just as interesting. The form of the 1611 number is modified to resemble the shape of a trading vessel, which alludes to humans’ long history of trading. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-family: rm-regular; font-size: 12pt;">Another project that has caught our attention is ‘Fieldoffice Incomplete Works, 1994,’ the monograph of the architectural studio Fieldoffice Architects. The book offers a remarkably poetic reading experience, achieved through a distinctive layout design that emphasizes the significance of negative space. The tread sewing technique employed as the binding method adds an artistic appeal to the book, despite its primary focus on architecture.</span></p>
