Truly grasping the ‘essence’ of a place becomes the paramount responsibility that was entrusted to architect, Pakorn Mahapant, of M Space and landscape architect, Suriya Umpansiriratana, of Walllasia by property owner Janejira Phornprapha. Their mission was to craft a new office building nestled within a half-acre forest garden—a remarkable lush enclave of mature trees in the heart of Ekamai, a bustling urban district in Bangkok.

The design brief was clear and centered around two significant requirements:

To conserve as many of the large trees as possible.

To repurpose, maintain, and make the best use of the existing wooden pavilion.

These directives are more than mere guidelines; they embody the ‘spirit’ of the site, something the architects are committed to achieving as the core of their mission. The history of this forest garden dates back to its days under the care of Major General Professor Mom Rajawongse Thongyai Thongyai, a former dean of Silpakorn University. As an ardent steward of the land, he planted and nurtured all the trees and flora and even erected a modest wooden pavilion for tranquil escapes within the garden. Over time, under the warm oversight of the Phornprapha family, this verdant urban refuge was passed into the stewardship of Janejira, continuing a legacy deeply rooted in the conservation of its trees and the venerable pavilion.

With a deliberate aim to lessen the impact on large trees, the office building’s design was intricately woven into the gaps among the old trees. Narrow at just 4 meters wide, the structure is nestled between these long standing trees, extending deep along the land’s contour. Even the walkway leading up to the building shares space with the branches of an overhanging mango tree, presenting a natural welcome from the environment itself. The building’s main floor is elevated, minimizing ground contact to avoid disturbing the growth of trees and their roots. The choice of a steel main structure facilitated the prefabrication and assembly of components right at the site, enabling the creation of an L-shaped building that smartly utilizes the confined space for office functions. This configuration effectively blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, to the point where the building’s boundaries nearly vanish.

Beneath the L-shaped structure lies a semi-outdoor zone embraced by southern breezes, designated for relaxation. Functionally reimagined, the structure was converted into a guesthouse complete with a bedroom, an en-suite bathroom, and a sizable kitchen designed to accommodate catering for events or company parties. Architecturally, the pavilion was raised to counteract issues with moisture and received foundational enhancements, including the sealing of gaps between the floorboards. These gaps were originally designed to enhance air circulation—a feature reconsidered with the introduction of air conditioning, which would otherwise be compromised by these gaps. The pavilion’s wooden panels and columns were meticulously treated to retain their original reddish tint, a nod to the natural coloration that had characterized the building from its inception.

The selection of vertical red wooden panels cleverly mirrors the rust-like hues that naturally occur on the steel façade of the adjacent office building, an aesthetic choice by the architects to forge a visual and functional link between the old and new structures. Moreover, the arrangement of the vertical steel sunshade panels, inspired by the wall patterns of the wooden pavilion, is thoughtfully calculated and can be adjusted to modulate light and ventilation, creating a harmonious interplay with the vertical elements of the walls and surrounding tree trunks.

The design team has deftly interspersed thick, rust-colored steel plates among the gravel of a walkway that bridges two distinct architectural periods. These plates, harmonizing with the façade color of the office building, are strategically placed at intervals to create the illusion of floating just above the gravel surface. They serve as a visual guide leading to the location of the spirit house, which, though its proportions and numerical measurements are accurately aligned with traditional auspicious practices, has been redesigned to perfectly suit this specific space. Additionally, the backdrop features a pattern that matches the decorative perforated eaves of the wooden pavilion, ensuring a seamless and harmonious integration.

‘The shared vision for the heart of the place,’ evolves into a guiding principle that unites all stakeholders in pursuit of a common objective. When the time came for the duo to finally build their new home, the stories they’ve encountered and experienced have been intertwined, rearranged and collaged into the house they both helped create out of their dreams. “We haven’t designed for so long. Luckily when we were out in the sites, photographing works, we noticed and remembered the details we’ve seen and sort of adapted them to our own house.”

The new house/studio of Spaceshift Studio is essentially a contemporary, two-story-high structure (with an entirely usable rooftop area) with an approximate functional space of 180 square meters. Having two architects as the owners, united collaboration and agreements were undoubtedly a challenge. It was later agreed that Aranyarat would be in charge of the design and Pirak would take the owner’s role. The two of them also welcomed advice from their architect and contractor friends with open arms.

The first issue that Pirak and Aranyarat had when they began working on the design was the problem they had been dealing with while living in the old house. Apart from the house’s ground level being lower than the public roadway, the structure, which was a part of a housing estate development, designed fifty-something years ago, barely included essential factors such as natural light and wind direction. This caused the interior space to accumulate heat, especially between the afternoon and the evening, due to the house’s southwest orientation. The two owners resolved the issue by elevating the house’s ground level to be higher than the public road to facilitate more efficient water drainage. A new layout was developed, switching the main functional spaces such as the office, kitchen and dining area which were originally on the west wing with the staircase on the east wing. It now allows the part of the house left unused almost throughout the day to function as heat protection. Additional openings are also created to welcome natural wind into the interior space.

Ketsiree Wongwan

The shift of a functional space to create a heat buffering zone was applied to the second-floor area. The sleeping quarter, which was initially situated towards the west and exposed to the afternoon sun, used to be the house’s warmest spot. Aranyarat created a semi-outdoor court, which comes with the functionality of a laundry area where clothes are washed and hung to dry. This particular functional space simultaneously blocks out the heat from the living room and the bedroom. More openings were added to facilitate airflow and ventilation throughout the day. The court keeps the heat from coming into other parts of the house while its existence becomes the house’s highlight that welcomes light and shadow through the rooftop’s glass floor and the customized steel partitions. “We can appreciate the lights and shadows while doing the laundry,” Pirak jokingly remarked.

Sunlight wasn’t the only dilemma bothering the two homeowners. While they were experimenting with several materials and prototypes (they even created photomontages to find the right visualization; something they will be able to live with for the rest of their lives), they got a job to photograph Oui J’aime Hotel in Chachoengsao province and saw the use of rusted, perforated steel panels as the principal element of the design. Impressed by the material’s thinness and lightness and truth to the material’s characteristic, the two agreed that this would be the solution to their house’s double skin. They contacted Suriya Amphansirirat of Walllasia, who happened to be both Oui J’aime’s architect and Pirak and Aranyarat’s friend, to design the details for the steel partitions.

After calculating the number of steel panels with the perforated holes in the desired size they needed (all under the set-out budget), Suriya designed five different folding variations that would coincide with the building’s perimeter. Looking further into the material’s manufacturing details, the folding configuration used for Spaceshift Studio House is designed in the zigzag form, reinforcing each panel’s strength while using relatively fewer panels, unlike the right angle design used for Oui J’aime Hotel. The house’s façade was also Suriya’s experimental playground where he tested his new formula of a rust protection solution he named ‘Flying Here.’ (ตะกวดบิน) “This house doesn’t have any interesting external context. It doesn’t have a nice surrounding, so there was this idea of, ‘why don’t we enclose the house and create our own environment?’ Suriya is also an artist, and we thought that having this beautiful steel sculpture as the double skin would be more than enough. Aranyarat wanted to use thicker rusty steel panels, the ones Suriya used for his home. They’re very thick, solid and masculine, but I wasn’t a fan of the idea, so we agreed on this one,” Pirak further elaborated.

Apart from having one of his dear friends helping with the double skin, Spaceshift Studio also had teams of architects and builders from CASE Studio and ED The Builder who assisted with the construction techniques and complicated structural details. The brief requires the design to create a house that brings dwellers closer to nature within the 435-square meter land situated right at the city center. The design team approaches the project as a place where landscape architecture and the architectural structure fuse into one, where the idea of a green space involves trees growing freely, embracing, towering over the house, allowing it to be something perfectly acceptable, where the changes will happen in alignment with the dwellers’ progressing courses in life.

We are talking about Mac & Ham House, another project by Suriya Umpansiriratana of Walllasia. The house does not only have the first and second floor but also the terrace connecting the main house with the container building. Another connecting point is the terrace on the main house’s second floor connecting to the third floor or the container house’s rooftop. The connectivity obscures the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces/ architecture-landscape architecture, reminiscing the experience of walking through a terrain of rhythmic shifts of hills and slopes. The split level characteristics enable new possibilities of spatial functionalities, such as how the ascending and descending platforms have also become seating areas for dwellers to use freely.

When we visited the house in June, the trees already found their ways into various parts of the house, covering all the sharp corners and edges of the architectural structures. During the first year, the architect began planting Siamese Rosewood, Indian cork trees, Lanete trees around the property with the intention for them to grow and engulf the built structures over time, offering a pleasant enclosure yet refreshing comfort for the living space. The fence is made of expanded metal sheets, functioning as both a blind and the structure where a climbing plant, cat’s claw trumpet, grows while the airy meshes’ attributes enable air and sunlight to come through.

Another exciting aspect about the project is the way the design team of Wallasia works with steel. In almost every part of the house, we can see the material being used, stretched, expanded, and added, creating varying results, such as the massive steel structure for the canvas roof. The architects informed art4d on how the steel structure’s lean mass is possible because they trained their builders to learn to cut the material by hand! The window frames are also customized to fix leaking water, causing each part’s details to be distinguished. The steel parts branching off mimics how trees grow in their natural habitat. Such an organic process is also what the structure’s construction was carried out with, ‘human hands’ gradually resolving the issue on-site instead of in front of a computer screen.

The moniker Mac&Ham House derives from the two French Bulldogs who are both members of the family and users of the house. What the owners and design team agree on is the close presence of nature the house never lacks. As trees grow into an urban forest, everyone notices how the house has become a home for squirrels and birds. Some settle down and build their homes while some regularly visit this small piece of land. The design has brought the house to the state where humans and nature can coexist. It fulfills the architect’s initial intention to start the project with an appreciation in nature, and complete it with nature being the pivotal part of the living experience. In the future, Mac&Ham House will continue to grow in the same direction to which the owners’ lives will be heading. The architects mentioned to art4d that from the very beginning, they wanted to create a house with flexible, functional spaces that will allow the owners to convert parts of the program into a gallery if they wish.

Humans have always been a part of nature. Being subsumed by the unstoppable sprawl of urban spaces and cultures, we are all intuitively longing to be surrounded by the presence of nature. The collaborative process between the architects and owners and their acknowledgment in such values give birth to a challenging yet fascinatingly executed urban space management despite the limited land area being one of the biggest challenges. We dream of seeing something like this occurring in public spaces in this city, especially during the time when mega shopping malls are still valued over green spaces. With no silver lining in sight, I couldn’t help but feel saddened by the situation, knowing that I have to prepare myself for the return of PM 2.5 and the high possibility of it becoming another issue that sees no way out; another new normal that I have to live with for god knows how long.

walllasia.com
fb.com/walllasia

The post THE LIVING CONTAINER appeared first on art4d.

THE GENTLE STEEL

pratchayapol

ARCHITECTURE

SELECTED

Hotel

Steel

SYS Steel

Oui J’aime

Walllasia

Walllasia + Kyai&Suriya Architectur

With SYS (Siam Yamato Steel) steels being used at its core, this project designed by Walllasia + Kyai&Suriya Architecture has changed our perception of steel forever

The post THE GENTLE STEEL appeared first on art4d.

WITH SYS (SIAM YAMATO STEEL) STEELS BEING USED AT ITS CORE, THIS PROJECT DESIGNED BY WALLLASIA + KYAI&SURIYA ARCHITECTURE HAS CHANGED OUR PERCEPTION OF STEEL FOREVER

TEXT: NAPAT CHARITBUTRA
PHOTO: SPACESHIFT STUDIO

(For Thai, press here)

Launching a hotel in second-tier cities, or in a passage way city of sorts, that is not far enough from Bangkok to convince people to stay overnight can be tricky. It was designed by Suriya Umpansiriratana and Kyai Nuichan, architects of Walllasia + Kyai&Suriya Architecture who turned an irregular empty lot with the dimensions of 30 meters wide and 7 meters deep (the narrow part is 3 meters) into a 4-storey hotel.

In terms of structural design, structural steel from SYS (Siam Yamato Steel) was utilized for the overall structure and became the main motif of the exterior and interior design. Ranging from folding steels façade that helps to create a sense of privacy, to the smaller-scale elements such as tree pots, spouts, and build-in furniture made of profile steel. Umpansiriratana told art4d that his intention was to soften the hardness of steel by using rusted steel. “When it comes to Chachoengsao province, I think about the Chinese traditional wooden houses along Bang Pakong River. Moreover, the 3-meter width of the southern part of the building is also softly blended with the context, created by the buffer zone made of the trees in front of the building that brings about a connection to green area from the pedestrian sidewalk all the way to the vacant lot behind the building.

art4d VISIT: Oui J’aime X Walllasia

art4d VISIT: Oui J’aime X WalllasiaOui J’aime โรงแรมขนาดเล็กที่ถูกจำกัดด้วยเนื้อที่ แต่มีรายละเอียดของการออกแบบและวัสดุที่ถูกคิดอย่างลึกซึ้งให้เข้ากับบริบทมากที่สุด.art4d VISIT ครั้งนี้ได้ไปพูดคุยกับ อุ้ย–ปิยะพร ตันคงคารัตน์ เจ้าของ Oui J’aime ถึงจุดเริ่มต้นของโรงแรม และสถาปนิกผู้ออกแบบ สุริยะ อัมพันศิริรัตน์ ถึงแนวคิดการออกแบบและการเลือกใช้เหล็กเป็นวัสดุหลักของโครงการ–Oui J’aime hotel, a limitation in space and unusual site dimension.
