art4d x Shma: Participation
This art4d monograph, the first issue on a landscape architect, unveils the design philosophy and methodologies behind Shma, a nearly two-decade-old Thai landscape architecture studio whose practice focuses on catalyzing social and environmental change under the core ethos: ‘ENABLE CHANGE FOR A BETTER EARTH.’
.
Their work spans landmark public spaces, such as Suan San and Chak Phupha Su Maha Nathee Park, to domestic and international developments, including the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), the Bank of Thailand Learning Center, One City Centre (OCC), Jin Wellbeing County, and Mapletree Business City II, as well as experimental urban interventions such as LongiPark! and Prompt Park.
.
Across this diverse body of work, Shma’s core foundation rests on a single word: Participation—their unique methodology grounded in every process, engaging designers, users, stakeholders, clients, and local communities. This process changes the role of the landscape architect: from mere spatial designer and arbiter of beauty to a mediator who weaves space, context, people, and ecological systems together.
.
Structured around four core themes—Planet, People, Place, and Process—this book documents dialogues between Shma’s three co-founders (Namchai Saensupha, Prapan Napawongdee, and Yossapon Boonsom) and guest collaborators, alongside in-depth research.
.
Together, each chapter offers a discourse relevant to both practitioners and the public: the role of landscape architects, human-nature relationships, shifting aesthetics, the essence of dwelling, well-being, and participatory design frameworks.
