WHAT IMPRESSED US FROM T.I.D.E

At the recently ended Thailand Innovation and Design Expo 2017 (T.I.D.E 2017), over 100 projects featured at Innovation Showcase zone have painted a much better picture for us of how close innovation is to our lives. It may come in the form of an invention created by pretty much anybody whether it be an agriculturist or a student. One of the interesting observations from the expo is how many of the works were designed to provide effective solutions for works through the use of processes that were far from complicated while some of the problems are little things in our everyday lives, stuff that we overlook. What the expo offers is a chance for us to see not only the processed agricultural and livestock products (some we have never seen before), but also the creative developments of recycled materials with greater increased aesthetic and commercial values. We also witness new technologies such as machines and applications created to help improve people’s quality of life. Some of the works might not exactly fall into the universal meaning of innovation that we know of but they are excellent examples of the Thai definition of ‘Innovation.’ Perhaps, it is through these Thai innovations that we are able to have a better understanding of what the next and bigger chapter of Thailand 4.0 will be like.

While most of the facilities in Thailand are not exactly designed to be fully wheelchair friendly, the Standing Wheelchair by CMED Medical is probably one of the most promising solutions. By standing, it means the chair is able to offer greater chances for wheelchair users to perform daily routines while the change of posture for disabled people helps to prevent additional negative health conditions and bedsores.

Those who are tending sick or physically impaired animals would feel that there’s nothing new about a pet wheelchair, but one cannot help but wonder why the wheelchairs available in the market are not as adjustable as they should be, not to mention the designs that don’t quite correspond with the physical features of either cats or dogs. Good Life (Thailand)ง ’s solution to the problem is developing its own adjustable, two wheel and four wheel pet wheelchairs for disabled animals as well as a model specially designed for old animals including those recovering from medical operations.

 The shapes of the spoons, plates, bowls and drinking glasses of this “Set of Elderly Tableware” may look a bit strange, but the concave and curvy details are designed to help with eating, offering users who are elderly and patients with muscle weakness greater convenience in the use of everyday utensils and fulfillment of routine activities.

 From a military technology to a personal photographic gadget, ‘drones’ have increasingly become a part of our lives. The latest project by students from Institute of FIeld roBOtics (FIBO), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), ‘insecticide drone’ offers a solution for a coconut garden where the tallness of the trees can be an obstacle used to provide the care they need. The specially designed drone is able to detect and analyze the parts of the trees affected by pests, allowing for the use of insecticide to be accurate and minimized while the agriculturists save both money, time and the risk of being directly exposed to the chemicals.

 We might have heard that people’s everyday consumption and the food processing industry create over 15,000 million eggshells each year, but we have no idea what such a massive amount of eggshells could be used for besides as an ingredient in animal feed, that is until Osisu and Sonite Innovative Surfaces collaborated toward the development of a new material called EMarble. The innovative product makes us realize that eggshells are strong enough to be used as a principle material in the manufacturing of ‘synthetic stone.’ We currently have a stool made of 500 eggshells while the future sees the possibility of eggshell wall cladding materials or even floor tiles.

 The sculptural creations by Wittaya Chaimongkol may seem like ordinary ceramic works but in reality they are the products of recycled office paper waste. From the process that gives birth to ‘paper clay,’ the materials are used in the making of handmade sculptures with a natural color and texture that are similar to those of natural stone and ceramics, but with a much lighter weight.

 The application developed by Land Development Department offers access to information about the physical characteristics and features of soils in Thailand. LDD Soil Guide also provides analysis of data with advice as to how to make the best use out of a particular piece of land with specific soil conditions, from choosing the most suitable plants to grow in an area to using the most efficient crop nutrition and fertilizers, consequentially allowing for modern-day agriculturists to effectively plan their production. LDD Soil Guide is a promising use of Big Data where a governmental agency turned the information into something that can be substantially beneficial to the people, which is what Thailand 4.0 should be about.

นับวันภาพของคำว่า “นวัตกรรม” ที่ถูกพ่วงติดไว้กับเทคโนโลยีสมัยใหม่ (หรือบางครั้งก็ล้ำสมัย) อย่างที่เราเห็นและเข้าใจกันผ่านข่าวสารหรือภาพยนตร์ในปัจจุบัน ดูจะยิ่งทำให้ตัวมันเองค่อยๆ โดนผลักให้ห่างออกไปจากชีวิตประจำวันของเรามากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จนหลายครั้งก็ทำให้เราอดรู้สึกไม่ได้ว่าทำไมนิยามของคำๆ นี้ ช่างเป็นอะไรที่เราน่าจะเกี่ยวข้องได้ยากเสียเหลือเกิน แต่เอาเข้าจริงแล้ว มันก็ไม่ได้เป็นของไกลตัวอะไรอย่างที่เราคิดกันเลย ของง่ายๆ ที่เข้ามาช่วยเปลี่ยนแปลงชีวิตเราให้ง่ายขึ้น ขอแค่มันถูกคิดหรือประดิษฐ์ขึ้นด้วยวิธีการใหม่ๆ หรือถูกพัฒนาต่อยอดจนเกิดเป็นมูลค่าเชิงบวกใหม่ๆ ขึ้นมา เท่านั้นก็เพียงพอที่มันจะถูกเรียกว่า “นวัตกรรม” ได้แล้ว

ภายในงาน Thailand Innovation and Design Expo 2017 (T.I.D.E 2017) ที่เพิ่งจะจบไปได้ไม่นาน ถ้าสังเกตดูดีๆ จะพบว่าผลงานต่างๆ ที่ถูกเลือกมาจัดแสดงอยู่ในโซน Innovation Showcase กว่า 100 ชิ้นงานนั้น ยิ่งช่วยทำให้เราเข้าใจภาพได้ชัดขึ้นกว่าเดิมว่านวัตกรรมไม่ใช่ของไกลตัว แต่เป็นสิ่งประดิษฐ์ที่ใครๆ ก็สามารถจะสร้างมันขึ้นมาได้ ไม่ว่าเขาเหล่านั้นจะเป็นเพียงชาวบ้านธรรมดา เกษตรกร หรือนักศึกษาก็ตาม ประเด็นหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจที่เราพบได้จากงานในครั้งนี้คือการที่ผลงานหลายๆ ชิ้นนั้น ต่างก็ถูกออกแบบขึ้นมาเพื่อใช้แก้ปัญหาบางอย่างให้กับผู้ใช้งานได้อย่างตรงจุด ด้วยวิธีการที่ไม่ได้ซับซ้อน แม้ว่าในบางปัญหาที่นวัตกรรมเหล่านี้เข้าไปจับจะดูเป็นเรื่องที่เราอาจเผลอละเลย และคิดว่ามันน่าจะเป็นแค่เรื่องเล็กน้อยมาตลอดก็ตาม ทำให้ภายในงานครั้งนี้เราเลยได้เห็นตั้งแต่การแปรรูปผลผลิตจากการเกษตรและปศุสัตว์แบบที่เรามักจะเห็นกันได้ทั่วไป (และในแบบที่เราไม่เคยคิดมาก่อน) การนำวัสดุเหลือใช้มาเพิ่มมูลค่าใหม่จนเราแทบจำไม่ได้ด้วยซ้ำว่ามันเคยเป็นของเหลือทิ้งพวกนั้นมาก่อน จนถึงการนำเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเครื่องจักรหรือแอพพลิเคชั่นมาช่วยทำให้คุณภาพชีวิตในแต่ละวันกลายเป็นเรื่องที่ง่ายขึ้นกว่าเดิม ของบางอย่างที่เราลองยกมาเหล่านี้อาจจะไม่ค่อยตรงตามภาพของนวัตกรรมในแบบสากลอย่างที่เราคุ้นเคยกันเท่าไร แต่ถึงอย่างนั้นเอาเข้าจริงเราคิดว่ามันน่าจะเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีเลยว่าคนในบ้านเรานั้นเขานิยามคำว่า “นวัตกรรม” ในแบบไทยๆ กันอย่างไร หรือบางทีมันก็อาจจะทำให้เราพอเข้าใจภาคต่อในสเกลที่ใหญ่ขึ้นอย่างนโยบายไทยแลนด์ 4.0 ได้มากขึ้นก็เป็นได้

รูปทรงของช้อน จาน ชาม และแก้วน้ำ ใน “ชุดอุปกรณ์บนโต๊ะอาหารสำาหรับผู้สูงอายุ” ชุดนี้อาจจะดูแปลกๆ ไปสักหน่อย แต่ความโค้งเว้าที่เห็นนี้ก็ได้ถูกออกแบบมาเพื่อช่วยให้การจับ ตัก และส่งอาหารเข้าปากในแต่ละมื้อด้วยตัวเองของผู้ที่มีความบกพร่องในการทำงานของแขนและมืออย่างผู้สูงอายุและผู้ป่วยที่มีภาวะกล้ามเนื้ออ่อนแรงไม่ใช่เรื่องยากเกินตัวอีกต่อไป

จากเทคโนโลยีทางทหารสู่อุปกรณ์ถ่ายภาพส่วนบุคคล ปัจจุบัน “โดรน” เขยิบเข้ามาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในชีวิตของเรามากกว่าที่คิด ล่าสุดกับผลงานโดยนักศึกษาจากสถาบันวิทยาการหุ่นยนต์ภาคสนาม มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าธนบุรี “โดรนพ่นสารกำจัดศัตรูพืช” ไม่เพียงช่วยแก้ปัญหาให้กับต้นมะพร้าวที่มีต้นสูงจนยากจะกำจัดศัตรูพืชได้เท่านั้น แต่ความสามารถในการตรวจสอบและวิเคราะห์ว่าใบหรือส่วนไหนของต้นมีศัตรูพืชอยู่บ้างเพื่อฉีดให้ตรงจุดยังช่วยให้เกษตรกร 4.0 ประหยัดทั้งเงินและเวลา แถมไม่ต้องมาเสี่ยงสัมผัสโดนสารเคมีโดยตรงด้วย

เราอาจรู้ว่าในปีๆ หนึ่งมีเปลือกไข่เหลือทิ้งจากการบริโภคและอุตสาหกรรมแปรรูปต่างๆ ประมาณ 15,000 ล้านฟอง แต่เราไม่ค่อยจะรู้เลยว่านอกจากอาหารสัตว์แล้ว เราเอาเปลือกไข่ไปทำอะไรได้อีกบ้าง จนกระทั่ง Osisu และ Sonite Innovative Surfaces จับมือกันพัฒนาวัสดุชนิดใหม่ในชื่อ EMarble ขึ้นมา เราถึงได้รู้ว่าไข่ไก่นั้นแข็งแรงมากพอที่จะใช้เป็นส่วนผสมในการผลิต “หินเทียม” สำาหรับอุตสาหกรรมต่างๆ ได้เลย ตอนนี้เราอาจจะได้เห็นแต่เก้าอี้สตูลที่ทำขึ้นมาจากไข่ 500 ฟองต่อตัว แต่ไม่แน่ว่าต่อไปเราอาจจะได้เห็นไข่ไก่กลายมาเป็นวัสดุก่อสร้างอย่าง วัสดุกรุผนัง หรือกระเบื้อง บ้างก็ได้

ประติมากรรมหลากหลายรูปแบบโดย วิทยา ชัยมงคล เหล่านี้อาจจะดูแล้วเหมือนเป็นแค่งานเซรามิกทั่วไป แต่จริงๆ แล้วผลงานที่เห็นนี้เกิดจากการนำวัสดุอย่างกระดาษเหลือใช้จากสำนักงาน มาผ่านกระบวนการเพื่อให้ได้ “ดินกระดาษ” ก่อนที่จะปั้นด้วยมือเพื่อให้ได้รูปทรงต่างๆ น่าสนใจที่สีธรรมชาติของเนื้อกระดาษเหล่านั้นเมื่อผสมกันและผ่านการขึ้นรูปแล้วกลับมีความคล้ายกับสีของหินหรือเซรามิกด้วยตัวของมันเองที่แน่ๆ ความต่างที่ชัดเจนของชิ้นงานเหล่านี้คือการที่มันมีน้ำหนักเบากว่างานประติมากรรมจากวัสดุอื่นๆ อยู่มาก

น้ำท่วมใหญ่เมื่อปี ‘54 ดูจะทำาให้ใครหลายๆ คนยังเข็ดขยาดไปกับระดับน้ำท่วมขังที่มาเยือนบ้านของเราทุกๆ หน้าฝน จนทำให้ต้องเตรียมวางกระสอบทรายกั้นเผื่อไว้ล่วงหน้าแม้ว่าจะหมดฤดูน้ำหลากไปแล้วก็ตาม ผลที่ตามมานอกจากภูมิทัศน์ที่ไม่สบายตาแล้ว ยังมีเรื่องของระบบนิเวศที่เสียหายไปเพราะกระสอบทรายเหล่านั้นด้วย “เขื่อนพับ” จึงกลายมาเป็นตัวเลือกใหม่ที่น่าสนใจ โดยนอกจากวัสดุที่เป็นส่วนผสมระหว่างโลหะและพลาสติกจะทำให้มันแข็งแรงทนทานต่อแรงดันน้ำแล้ว การพับและกางได้โดยง่ายของเขื่อนกั้นน้ำนี้ยังทำให้มันสะดวกต่อการใช้งานและจัดเก็บ

แอพพลิเคชั่นที่พัฒนาขึ้นโดยกรมพัฒนาที่ดิน โดยนอกจากจะช่วยบอกข้อมูลให้เราได้ทราบถึงลักษณะและคุณสมบัติของดินในแต่ละพื้นที่ของไทยแล้ว การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลพร้อมกับแนะนำว่าเราสามารถจะใช้ประโยชน์จากดินในพื้นที่ที่ต้องการได้อย่างไรบ้างนั้น เช่น ดินนั้นเหมาะกับการปลูกพืชชนิดใด หรือควรใช้ปุ๋ยแบบไหน ยังช่วยให้เกษตรกรยุคใหม่สามารถวางแผนก่อนการเพาะปลูกได้เป็นอย่างดี เป็นเรื่องน่ายินดีที่ในที่สุดเราก็ได้เห็นการใช้ Big Data ที่ทางภาครัฐมีข้อมูลในมืออยู่แล้ว มาสร้างให้เกิดประโยชน์จริงๆ ต่อประชาชนให้สมกับแคมเปญประเทศไทย 4.0 กับเขาเสียที
