WHILE THE NAME OF REPUBLIC OF FRITZ HANSEN OFTEN REFERENCES THE BRAND’S ICONIC LEATHER CHAIR, WHAT MOST PEOPLE OFTEN FORGET IS THE FACT THAT THE MASTERFUL TECHNIQUE AND THE ACTUAL BEGINNING OF FRITZ
And it’s nendo who revisits wood as the principal material for the design of N01, the first wooden chair to be produced by Fritz Hansen in 61 years since Arne Jacobsen’s Grand Prix Chair was created in 1957.
The first objective of the design was to create a visually and physically light chair. A study and analysis revealed that the joinery details and materials were the causes of the chair’s weight and bulkiness. An attempt to find a solution to such issue led to the core concept and the assembly of 23 wooden pieces of a mix of solid wood and veneer. The process began by specifying the points of joinery. Different pieces of wood were brought together through the ultra-precise puzzlelike groove joinery, creating amazing details that seem as if the two parts were barely touched. The layered backrest slots into sections on the frame and the shorter armrests allow for the chair to be pushed right up towards a dining table while the seat slopes at either side to fit around the body. The technique was applied to other compositions of the chair from the backrest that appears as if it were slotted into the solid pieces of wood to the seat that looks as though it was lightly placed on the frame. The backrest and seat were crafted from nine thin layers of veneer featuring the details of the traditional steam bending technique that Fritz Hansen’s chairs are famous for. The chair was designed to follow the laws of ergonomics with the slope of the armrests that perfectly corresponds to human sitting positions. The armrests were further made shorter so as to be in a range that is both convenient to use and also allows for the chair to be stacked when needed.

เป้าหมายแรกในการออกแบบเก้าอี้ตัวนี้คือการทำให้เก้าอี้ดูเบา และจากการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาที่ทำให้เก้าอี้ดูหนักและแน่นซึ่งคือการเชื่อมระหว่างข้อต่อและวัสดุ หนทางแก้ปัญหาจึงนำมาสู่คอนเซ็ปต์หลักและวิธี “การสวม” ท่อนไม้และแผ่นไม้วีเนียร์ทั้ง 23 ชิ้น เพื่อประกอบขึ้นเป็นเก้าอี้ กระบวนการทำงานเริ่มต้นจากการสังเกตว่าจุดไหนบ้างที่ต้องเชื่อมต่อกัน ก่อนจะเชื่อมส่วนนั้นเข้าด้วยกัน โดยการเซาะร่องไม้ชิ้นหนึ่งเพื่อวางไม้อีกชิ้นลงไปให้ความรู้สึกเหมือนกับทั้งสองชิ้นเพียงสัมผัสกันเท่านั้น เทคนิคนี้ถูก apply ไปกับทุกๆ ส่วนประกอบของเก้าอี้ ทั้งแผ่นพนักพิงที่เหมือนกับแค่โดนเสียบเข้าไปในท่อนไม้ และแผ่นรองนั่งที่ก็เหมือนกับวางลอยๆ อยู่บนโครงเก้าอี้ แผ่นพนักพิงและเบาะรองนั่งเป็นแผ่นวีเนียร์ไม้ 9 ชั้น ที่ถูกดัดโค้งตามเทคนิคดั้งเดิมของ Fritz Hansen และถูกออกแบบรับกับสรีระของการนั่งตามหลักการยศาสตร์เช่นเดียวกับส่วนเท้าแขนที่วางสโลปให้พอดีกับรูปแบบการวางแขน แต่ถูกตัดให้สั้นลงในระยะที่ยังคงใช้งานได้สะดวก เพื่อฟังก์ชั่นในการสอดเก็บไว้ใต้โต๊ะ
