A HOUSE THAT IS BIGGER THAN ITSELF

The view along the ride on a tram that runs from Basel, Switzerland to Weil am Rhein, a town on Germany’s border, is filled with a bunch of small houses of a similar appearance, be they the shape of the roof, walls or windows. By the time I reached Vitra Campus after a 15-minute walk from Weil am Rhein station, the landscape had been unknowingly imprinted in my head. It is the stereotype of the architecture of a German suburb that Herzog & de Meuron used with their two buildings at Vitra Campus designed to be the friendly neighbors of several other architectural creations by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Alvaro Siza, SANAA, Jean Prouvé, Nicholas Grimshaw and Buckminster Fuller.

While Vitra Haus building, which is H & deM’s first work and the center of Vitra’s home collection, can be considered an attempt to propose the recollection of German suburban architecture’s stereotypes in a ‘domestic scale’ re-emphasized through the accumulation of forms, it demolishes our memory of the houses’ physicality by extruding structural compositions and creating a rather chaotic architectural mass, giving the end result of an incredibly interesting space. If that’s the case, their next project, Schaudepot, is the mimic of such house in the same scale through an expansion that can be compared to a balloon filled with air. It reaches the point where the ‘image’ of the house’s original form almost disappears from certain visual ranges. The whole building, including the ground above the steps at the front, are wrapped with a mass of broken red bricks whose narrow section is used to render the entire finish of the exterior texture.

The official opening of Schaudepot will take place in June of 2016 and the space houses Vitra’s permanent exhibition, which comprises over 400 works with some dating back to 1800. Each year, the space welcomes three temporary exhibitions with themes related to the main exhibition. After the opening, Schaudepot, together with the original museum building by Frank Gehry and Vitra Design Museum, turns Vitra Campus into the world’s largest collection of modern furniture design with over 7,000 works under its roof. 

Facing Zaha Hadid’s Fire Station, Schaudepot stands as the architecture’s binary opposition. The two buildings’ architectural conceptualizations are not too different in terms of the way the works challenge one’s perception and experience towards their scales and forms. The interior of the Fire Station is full of unexpected lines and corners whereas Schaudepot, as mentioned earlier, is the result of the architects’ use of certain aspects of common architectural traits of local residences as the key to reverse one’s perception through a drastic change of scale. This seems to be Herzog & de Meuron’s recent interest and source of experimentation when it comes to the design of their buildings. There are times when the similarity is so seamless that some of their buildings require a longer time to contemplate before we eventually see something in the message they send out.

Once, in an interview, Jacques Herzog said with an expressionless face, “When you look at something that interests you but you don’t see what it is…………LOOK LONGER.”

Schaudepot เปิดตัวอย่างเป็นทางการในเดือนมิถุนายน 2016 โดยเป็นที่สำหรับจัดนิทรรศการถาวรของ Vitra ที่บรรจุผลงานต่างๆกว่า 400 ชิ้น ที่ไล่มาตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1800 และในแต่ละปีก็จะมี 3 นิทรรศการชั่วคราวตามธีมที่มีความเชื่อมโยงกับตัวนิทรรศการถาวรอีกทีหนึ่ง ซึ่งเมื่อหลังจากการเปิดตัว Schaudepot แห่งนี้แล้วรวมเข้ากับอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์เดิมของ Frank Gehry และ Vitra Design Museum ก็จะทำให้ Vitra Campus นี้กลายเป็นหนึ่งในศูนย์รวมผลงานเฟอร์นิเจอร์สมัยใหม่ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของโลกด้วยชิ้นงานกว่า 7,000 แบบ

ตัวอาคาร Schaudepot ตั้งอยู่ตรงข้ามกับอาคาร Fire Station ของ Zaha Hadid ทำาให้เป็นเสมือนคู่ตรงข้ามในแง่ของรูปทรงอาคาร แต่ในเชิงความคิดทางสถาปัตยกรรมกลับมีความซับซ้อนไม่ต่างกันมากนักในเรื่องของการท้าท้ายประสาทการรับรู้โดยเฉพาะในแง่ของการมองเห็น รวมทั้งประสบการณ์ที่มีต่อขนาดและรูปทรงของอาคาร เพราะภายในของ Fire Station นั้นเต็มไปด้วยเส้นสายและเหลี่ยมมุมที่บางครั้งไม่เป็นอย่างที่คาดคิดเมื่อมองจากภายนอก ส่วน Schaudepot อย่างที่กล่าวถึงข้างต้นว่าตัวสถาปนิกเลือกแง่มุมของทรงบ้านที่พบเห็นได้ทั่วไปในบริเวณนั้นมาเป็นกุญแจหลักในการพลิกการรับรู้โดยการเปลี่ยนสเกลของมันอย่างรุนแรง ซึ่งก็ดูเหมือนจะเป็นสิ่งที่ Herzog & de Meuron สนใจ และเลือกที่จะทดลองใช้กับหลายๆ โครงการของพวกเขาในช่วงเวลานี้ และบางครั้งออกจะแนบเนียนเสียจนบางอาคารของพวกเขาต้องใช้เวลาในการมองนานกว่าปกติเพื่อที่จะได้เห็นอะไรบางอย่างในแมสเสจที่พวกเขาส่งออกมา
