WHAT’S EXTRA SPECIAL ABOUT THE TWO ISSUES OF AG IS THE FACT THAT THE TWO EDITORS CHOSE TO GO ACROSS THE OCEAN AND EXPLORE THE ARCHITECTURAL REPERTOIRE OF LEGENDARY THAI ARCHITECT, DR. SUMET JUMSAI NA AYUDHAYA
There are times when the perceptions towards architecture projected in the media, particularly those told through images published in magazines or on websites that bring together a collection of legendary projects, are the impeccable presentations of space and compositions of unused architecture, which can feel somewhat lifeless. Such repetitive presentation makes us wonder if these spaces were to really be used, would the architecture maintain such a state of flawlessness? (the answer would definitely be, no). We were lucky enough to accidentally be introduced to a magazine/zine from Berlin that goes by the name of Architektur in Gebrauch or AG. Judging from the name, which translates directly to ‘Architecture in Use,’ the publication gives quite a clear impression of its concept and content. Featured in each issue is one architectural project whose usage, ways in which it has changed and transformation through time is told through the presentation of old articles that compare and display the evolving progression of the work.
But what’s extra special about the latest two issues of AG is the fact that the two editors, Sandra Bartoli and Silvan Linden, chose to go across the ocean and explore the architectural repertoire of legendary Thai architect, Dr. Sumet Jumsai na Ayudhaya instead of the architecture of the west as in the four previous issues. The fifth AG looks into the architecture of the original British Council building at Siam Square and the urban context surrounding it while the sixth issue highlights the profile, working philosophy and Jumsai’s projects in general. Parts of the content come from the two editors’ translation of the article ‘Sumet Jumsai – Thailändischer Avangardist’ published in Bauwelt magazine as well as the republication of articles written about Jumsai between the 70s and 80s featured in magazines like Domus or a+u.
The study brings together information from different sources including photographs of each building (some were demolished such as the pyramid-shaped structure in Sra Pathum Palace that was torn down in 2015) or even interviews with the architect conducted in 2013 and 2014 allowing for the comprehensiveness of the content. Such attempt reflects the extent of seriousness and dedication in the way that AG works with its subject, but we cannot help but wonder how everything would turn out if the content were handled from the perspectives of Thai contributors rather than that of foreigners.
บ่อยครั้งที่มุมมองเกี่ยวกับงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่เราเห็นตามสื่อต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งที่ถูกเล่าออกมาผ่านภาพถ่ายตามหน้านิตยสารหรือบนเว็บไซต์ที่รวบรวมงานดังๆ นั้น มักเน้นการนำเสนอแต่เพียงภาพความไร้ที่ติของสเปซและองค์ประกอบต่างๆ ตอนที่สถาปัตยกรรมเหล่านั้นยังไม่ถูกใช้งาน จนบางครั้งก็อาจจะดูเหมือนว่ามันขาดชีวิตชีวาไป บนความซ้ำซากจำเจของการนำเสนอแบบนี้เอง ที่ทำให้เราอดสงสัยไม่ได้ว่าเมื่อสเปซเหล่านั้นถูกใช้งานเข้าจริงๆ ภาพของสถาปัตยกรรมเหล่านั้นจะยังคงไร้ที่ติอย่างที่มันถูกนำเสนออยู่หรือเปล่า (ซึ่งก็แน่นอนอยู่แล้วว่าคำตอบคือ ไม่) มันจึงนับเป็นโชคดีที่เรามีโอกาสได้รู้จักกับนิตยสารกึ่งซีนจากเบอร์ลินอย่าง Architektur in Gebrauch หรือ AG เข้าโดยบังเอิญ เพราะแค่ดูจากชื่อของนิตยสารที่แปลตรงตัวได้ว่า “สถาปัตยกรรมที่กำลังถูกใช้งาน” (Architecture in Use)ก็พอจะอธิบายให้เราเข้าใจถึงคอนเซ็ปต์ของเนื้อหาภายในได้ค่อนข้างชัดเจนแล้ว โดยนอกจากงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่ถูกยกมาพูดถึงฉบับละชิ้น จะถูกเล่าให้เห็นถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นจากการใช้งานในปัจจุบันแล้ว การหยิบเอาบทความเก่าๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับสถาปัตยกรรมชิ้นนั้นๆ มาใส่ไว้ในเล่มยังช่วยเปรียบเทียบและแสดงให้เราได้เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้นกับงานชิ้นต่างๆ เหล่านั้นอีกด้วย
นอกจากนั้น ความพิเศษของ AG สองฉบับล่าสุด คือการที่สองบรรณาธิการ Sandra Bartoli และ Silvan Linden เลือกที่จะโฟกัสข้ามทะเลมาที่ผลงานของสถาปนิกระดับตำนานชาวไทยอย่าง ดร.สุเมธ ชุมสาย ณ อยุธยา แทนการนำาเสนอภาพของสถาปัตยกรรมในโลกตะวันตกเหมือนอย่าง 4 ฉบับก่อนหน้า โดย AG ฉบับที่ 5 เลือกเล่าถึงอาคาร British Council หลังเดิมในสยามสแควร์ และบริบทของเมืองที่เกิดขึ้นในพื้นที่บริเวณนั้น ส่วนฉบับที่ 6 จะให้น้ำหนักไปที่ประวัติ แนวคิด และผลงานในภาพรวมของ ดร.สุเมธ มากกว่า เนื้อหาในบางส่วนนั้นมาจากการแปลบทความโดยสองบรรณาธิการเองที่เคยถูกตีพิมพ์ลงนิตยสาร Bauwelt ในชื่อ ‘Sumet Jumsai – Thailändischer Avangardist’ มาก่อน ในขณะที่บางส่วนจะเป็นการนำบทความเกี่ยวกับ ดร.สุเมธ ที่เคยถูกพิมพ์ช่วงในปี 70-80 จากนิตยสาร เช่น Domus หรือ a+u มาพิมพ์ใหม่ การศึกษารวบรวมข้อมูลจากแหล่งต่างๆ การบันทึกภาพอาคารแต่ละหลัง (ซึ่งบางหลัง เช่น อาคารทรงพีระมิดในพื้นที่วังสระปทุม ก็ถูกทุบไปแล้วเมื่อปี 2015) หรือแม้แต่การสัมภาษณ์ตัวสถาปนิกเองถึงสองครั้งในปี 2013 และ 2014 เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งความครบถ้วนของข้อมูล แสดงให้เราเห็นถึงความจริงจังมากๆ ในการทำางานของ AG จนเราเองก็แอบคิดเล่นๆ อยู่เหมือนกันว่าถ้าเนื้อหาเหล่านี้ไม่ได้ถูกทำขึ้นโดยฝรั่ง แต่เป็นคนไทยเองจะมีภาพที่แตกต่างไปจากนี้มากน้อยแค่ไหนกัน
