MENTAHMATTER

WHO
MentahMatter Design, architecture firm

WHAT
We are a multi-disciplinary architecture firm, focusing on small projects and public community projects that are close to the human scale.

WHEN
2013 – present

WHERE
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

WHY
We are always seeking outlets to create architecture that employs a primitive approach, and believe in the context and interaction amongst people, in both simple and practical ways; that’s why we prefer to work on small projects, or experiment with alternative possibilities and approaches toward space/objects.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
We believe design inspiration can come from anything in your life; it can be certain memories or moments that spark a fresh idea, and of course, observation.

WHERE DO YOU GO, OR WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU GET STUCK ON A PROJECT?
We can’t live without coffee and alcohol. We love local kopitiam, markets, farming, interesting cafés and some local pubs.

NAME A BOOK THAT YOU THINK EVERY CREATIVE SHOULD READ.
Peter Zumthor, “Thinking of Architecture.”

WHAT DESIGN TOOL CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

Eyes, hands and feet, and the most important, the digital gadgets.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE CREATIVITY?
Creativity isn’t sparked from nowhere; it is from observation and maintaining a sensitivity toward what happens in our surroundings and our lives.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON CURRENTLY?

Small housing projects and some public community projects.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE CITY THAT YOU LIVE IN?

Kuala Lumpur – we like the mixed-culture, the foods and different living patterns of the different races. It gives us tons of inspiration. Especially because our firm is set in a small village, an area that is full with a great sense of community and a close-knit neighborhood – this is how and where we get most of our design inspiration.
