SOUTHERN FIELD INDUSTRIES

WHO
My name is Manabu. I’m a designer and co-founder of Southern Field Industries.

WHAT
I am producing canvas bags and small goods with my wife, Keiko in Saitama, Japan.

WHEN
Our first collection launched late in 2011.

WHERE
We are based in Saitama, Japan. Our home and studio is located in the countryside of the Saitama region.

WHY
Leading up to starting Southern Field Industries, I worked at my father’s factory producing equestrian products for the Japanese racehorse industry. I believe our products will satisfy the most demanding clients as they are produced with high quality standards in mind. Our goal is to have many people know about our products and cherish our products.

DESCRIBE YOUR PRACTICE IN THREE WORDS
Small. Quiet. Honest.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
Inspirations come from everything surrounding us.

WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHERS IN YOUR FIELD?
Being honest and being ourselves.

WHERE DO YOU GO, OR WHAT DO YOU DO, WHEN YOU GET STUCK ON A PROJECT?

Go to Onsen and just relax.

WHAT DESIGN TOOL CAN YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT?
Coffee and silence.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE CITY THAT YOU LIVE IN?

One of my favorite things is walking with my dog in the woods. There are lots of paths to walk through the local nature or by the beautiful river.

DESCRIBE YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS WHEN DEVELOPING A NEW WORK.

Just getting inspired from my notebook that has so many drawings and archives. And so many discussions with Keiko and making samples, again and again…
