ESZTER CHEN IS A VISUAL ARTIST BORN IN TAIPEI, RAISED IN L.A., AND CURRENTLY WORKING BETWEEN THE TWO. CHEN CREATES WORKS THAT UNFOLD THROUGH BOTH PATTERN AND PERSONALITY, EXPLORING BOTH HER COMMERCIAL AND PERSONAL PRACTICES THROUGH DRAWING, PAINTING, MIXED-MEDIA AND SURFACE DESIGN.
How would you describe your work and practice in three words?
Explore, Color, Modern.
And how would you describe your work and practice in as many words as you would like?
It’s pretty much like a little girl trying to bring her mind into some visible and tangible pieces.
I am curious about the characters in your images – are they based on real and familiar people or are they more often people whom you encounter for the first time on the page?
Most of them are from my imagination, some of them are from some interesting references of portraits and a few of them are from people I know. The funny thing is that I usually find out that some of my imagined characters are eventually matched with some people who I have met.
From painting and project to pattern and product, how would you describe the elements that drive a similar sense of character across your many creative outlets
They usually came from my original idea and elements for my paintings. I will take the interesting parts of them (sometimes the boring parts) into different outlets like patterns and products. Most of the projects section on my page is for clients with a specific direction and themes.
I understand that your studio is based in a co-working space. In what ways (if any) does the shared environment come into play within your practice?
I worked in a co- working space for the past year, but recently moved to my own independent working space. It was fun and a cheering year working with some talented and fun creatives; of course I found both good and bad sides, but I’m looking forward to getting some people together to work on something more later on.
What are you working on currently? What’s next and on deck for Eszter Chen?
Im working on my new personal art including paintings and sculptures for my solo show that will be held this summer. I will try something more crazy and sophisticated that I don’t even know what it is yet.
