AS AN ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE, PRINCE RAMA HAS BEEN THROUGH THE THICK AND THIN.
First opening in 1917, it was once one of the most historically significant theaters in Bangkok (probably in the region). Prince Rama’s popularity began to fall due to the rise of home theaters and changed to screen double features and eventually porn films before it closed down for good in 2010.
Heritage Stay Company Limited recently won a bidding competition and was granted a concession from The Treasury Department to manage the particular area for the duration of 10 years, a development which involved the transformation of the old theatre into a boutique hotel. The project’s designer, Chittipan Srikasikorn, interpreted the erotic history of this x-rated theatre into Stay X-traordinary at Bangkok’s Only X-Theatre Hotel’ concept. The second floor space was divided into 24 rooms housing 22 beds with shared bathrooms and two 40-square-meter Master Suite rooms located behind the theatre’s original screen.The ground floor that once hosted the screening auditorium now accommodates a restaurant, bar and small exhibition space displaying the project’s history as well as old equipment. In addition to the preserved identity of the old movie theatre, from the massive screen and low platform in front of it (which is ideal for the organization of different activities), one of the charms of Prince Theatre Heritage Stay Bangkok is the unique vibe of the Bangkok neighborhood surrounding the site that allows for the hotel’s guests to experience the daily life of the locals.
ปรินซ์ รามา เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมที่ผ่านร้อนผ่านหนาวมาไม่น้อย มันเคยเป็นโรงหนังที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์แห่งหนึ่งในกรุงเทพฯ (อาจจะรวมถึงในภูมิภาคด้วย) จากโรงหนังที่เปิดทำการตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2460 เมื่อความนิยมไปดูหนังในโรงลดลงเมื่อเข้าสู่ยุคโฮมเธียเตอร์ ปรินซ์ รามา ก็ถูกเปลี่ยนมาฉายหนังแบบสองเรื่องควบวนไปทั้งวัน จนสุดท้ายกลายเป็นโรงหนังฉายหนังโป๊ก่อนจะปิดตัวลงไปในปี 2553
ไม่นานมานี้ บริษัท เฮอริเทจ เสตย์ จำกัด ชนะการประมูลการบริหารพื้นที่จากกรมธนารักษ์ และได้สิทธิในการบริหารจัดการพื้นที่ดังกล่าวเป็นระยะเวลา 10 ปี การพัฒนาครั้งนี้คือการเปลี่ยนโรงหนังให้กลายเป็นบูติกโฮเต็ล ดีไซเนอร์โครงการ จิตติพันธ์ ศรีกสิกร ตีความความอิโรติกของโรงหนัง x-rate โรงนี้มาเป็นคอนเซ็ปต์ Stay X-traordinary at Bangkok’s Only X-Theatre Hotel และซอยพื้นที่ชั้นสองของโรงหนังให้เป็นห้องพักจำนวน 24 ห้อง ประกอบด้วยห้องพักรวมแบบแชร์ห้องน้ำ 22 เตียง และ Master Suite ขนาด 40 ตารางเมตร 2 ห้อง ที่ถูกแทรกอยู่บริเวณข้างหลังของจอหนังเดิม พื้นที่ชั้นล่างที่เคยเป็นพื้นที่โรงหนังก็ถูกเปลี่ยนให้เป็นร้านอาหาร บาร์ และพื้นที่นิทรรศการย่อมๆ ที่จัดแสดงความเป็นมาและอุปกรณ์ฉายหนังเก่าของโรงหนังแห่งนี้ นอกจากจุดเด่นจากการเก็บรักษาเอกลักษณ์เดิมของโรงหนังอย่างจอฉายหนังขนาดใหญ่และเวทีเตี้ยๆ หน้าจอฉายหนังเอาไว้ (ที่น่าจะทำให้พื้นที่นี้จัดกิจกรรมได้หลากหลาย) อีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่เป็นเสน่ห์ของ Prince Theatre Heritage Stay Bangkok คงเป็นบรรยากาศรอบๆ เพราะโรงแรมตั้งอยู่กลางชุมชนย่านบางรัก ทำให้แขกที่มาพักได้ใกล้ชิดกับกิจวัตรประจำวันของคนในละแวกนั้นอย่างเป็นกันเอง
