Founded in 2008 by Decha Archjananun and Ploypan Theerachai, THINKK Studio’s design practice ranges from small-scale decorative objects and furniture to hotels. In addition to the studio’s own projects, the design team takes part in the development of design products for local crafts communities under the brand THINGG, including providing design consultancy services for manufacturers and entrepreneurs and curating exhibitions. The studio’s first exhibition in Bangkok, Thinkk Together, recently took place as a part of Bangkok Design Week 2018.
art4d: Who has been the most influential figure for you regarding the way you work?
THINKK Studio: Apart from the Bouroullec Brothers whom we admire for the consistent standard of their practice, there is also Augustin Scott de Martinville, the designer from BIG-GAME who is currently teaching at ECAL. He’s a great teacher and motivator who often gives great, insightful advice that allows students to develop their own direction and individuality. His professionalism is on point and he provides incredibly useful suggestions for how to handle and present a project.
art4d: What is the thing that seems to be the least important but turns out to be the most important when you work?
THINKK Studio: A ruler or a measuring tape because dimensions and proportions on a computer screen always fool us, especially with product design where an inaccuracy that takes place in millimeters can have a great deal of effect on the work.
art4d: What is your opinion on the notion of a national or regional identity and its role in a creative product?
THINKK Studio: When we have been working for a while through the perspective of furniture and product design, we can observe a national identity in one’s design. Some nations have had their own design and art traditions for a long time, such as Italy, Japan, France, Scandinavia and even China which is up-and-coming. One aspect is from successful designers or the master artists in each country that help to push up the national pattern which also includes the perception of all that nation’s people.
art4d: What do you wish you had told yourself 10 years ago?
THINKK Studio: I want to thank myself for starting to follow my dream through this career, even if I received many warnings that doing so would make for a hard living.

art4d: ใครที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการทำงานของคุณที่สุด
THINKK Studio: นอกจาก Bouroullec Brothers ที่เราชื่นชมในการรักษามาตรฐานของการทำงานที่ดีแล้ว ยังมี Augustin Scott de Martinville ดีไซเนอร์จาก BIGGAME ซึ่งสอนอยู่ที่ ECAL เป็นทั้งอาจารย์ และผู้ผลักดันที่ดี ซึ่งมักจะให้แง่คิดและแนวทางในการพัฒนาผลงานของนักเรียนแต่ละคนให้เป็นตัวของตัวเองสัมผัสได้ถึงความเป็นนักออกแบบมืออาชีพซึ่งจะคอยแนะนำวิธีการต่างๆ ในการรับมือและนำเสนอผลงาน
art4d: คิดว่าอะไรคือสิ่งที่ดูเหมือนจะไม่จำเป็นแต่กลับจำเป็นที่สุดเวลาทำงาน
THINKK Studio: ไม้บรรทัดหรือตลับเมตร เพราะระยะและสัดส่วนเมื่อดูในคอมพิวเตอร์มักจะหลอกเราอยู่เสมอ โดยเฉพาะการออกแบบงานผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ระยะผิดพลาดในหน่วยมิลลิเมตรนั้นมีผลกับงานค่อนข้างมาก
art4d: คิดเห็นอย่างไรกับประเด็นเกี่ยวกับอัตลักษณ์ (identity) ความเป็นชาติ/ภูมิภาค ในผลงานสร้างสรรค์
THINKK Studio: พอเราทำงานไปสักระยะหนึ่ง ในมุมของงานเฟอร์นิเจอร์และผลิตภัณฑ์ เราเริ่มสังเกตเห็นได้จริงๆในภาพรวมของอัตลักษณ์ในชาติต่างๆ ซึ่งถ้ามองดีๆ จะพบว่าชาติเหล่านั้นล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นชาติที่มีรากฐานในงานออกแบบและศิลปะมาอย่างยาวนาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น อิตาลี ญี่ปุ่น ฝรั่งเศส สแกนดิเนเวีย หรือแม้แต่จีนซึ่งกำลังมาแรง ส่วนหนึ่งนั้นเกิดจากความสำเร็จของนักออกแบบหรือศิลปินต้นแบบในแต่ละประเทศได้ผลักดันรูปแบบของแต่ละชาติ รวมทั้งส่งผลต่อการรับรู้ของคนในวงกว้าง
art4d: อยากบอกอะไรกับตัวเองเมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน
THINKK Studio: อยากขอบคุณตัวเองที่ได้เริ่มต้นลงมือเดินตามความฝัน ในเส้นทางอาชีพนี้ แม้จะมีคำเตือนมากมายว่าอย่ามาทำเฟอร์นิเจอร์หรือผลิตภัณฑ์เลยเพราะว่าเลี้ยงชีพได้ยาก
