FOR PEOPLE IN PENANG, LOKE THYE KEE, AN ALMOST DECADE OLD EATERY, IS CONSIDERED NOTHING SHORT OF LEGENDARY
The Chinese restaurant has been popular and based in the city since the period when the area was permeated with the sense of historical charm that has made it to be one of the most elegant international cities in the region. Recently, a few of Penang’s traditional colonial-style shophouses dating back to the early 20th century were transformed into a new boutique hotel by a group of real estate developers from Singapore who saw the potential for renovation in the five rows of adjoining commercial buildings.
The renovation and interior design by Ministry of Design resulted in the creation of a ground floor comprised of four retail spaces and a lobby, while the upper floor hosts five units of hotel rooms approximately 40 square meters each in size. Likewise, MOD’s previous boutique hotel projects (The New Majestic and The Club in Singapore’s Chinatown and Macallister Mansion in Penang, Malaysia) have similarly transformed unique heritage buildings through conservation aimed at pairing the prior atmosphere with a contemporary sensibility. The resulting renovations are comfortable and luxurious, authentic and innovative. Lighting technologies, modern accessories, wider spaces and works of contemporary art and design featuring local talents are framed within the space, generating an atmosphere that continues to portray the historical context inherent to the site.
The second phase of the Loke Thye Kee Residences project (2016) plans to take on Penang’s oldest cinema, converting the bygone venue into a modern events space.

งานปรับปรุงอาคารและออกแบบอินทีเรียเป็นของ Ministry of Design โดยมีชั้นล่างเป็นล็อบบี้และร้านค้าอีก 4 ร้าน ส่วนชั้นบนเป็นห้องพักขนาดประมาณ 40 ตารางเมตร รวม 5 ห้อง เช่นเดียวกับโรงแรมบูติคหลายโปรเจ็คต์ก่อนหน้านี้ของ MOD ที่อาคารเก่าถูกเก็บไว้และปรับปรุงให้ยังคงมีบรรยากาศของอาคารเดิม ปะทะกับความร่วมสมัยที่เกิดจากการตกแต่งใหม่ที่เพิ่มเข้ามา ทั้งในด้านความสะดวกสบายและความหรูหราไม่ว่าจะเป็นด้วยการใช้เทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ เช่น ไฟแสงสว่างและอุปกรณ์อำนวยความสะดวก ความโล่งของสเปซในห้องพัก รวมทั้งอาร์ตเวิร์กในจุดต่างๆ ของโรงแรม ซึ่งมักจะมีงานออกแบบร่วมสมัยปะปนกับงานออกแบบหรืองานศิลปะของศิลปินท้องถิ่นที่นำมาสร้างบรรยากาศและเรื่องราวในประวัติศาสตร์ของที่ตั้งอาคารด้วย
นอกจากผนังอิฐที่สถาปนิกตั้งใจกระเทาะผนังปูนเก่าให้เห็นเนื้ออิฐเดิมแล้ว ก็แทบจะไม่มีองค์ประกอบอื่นที่โดนใจหรือชวนให้จดจำเท่าไหร่เลย เมื่อเทียบกับโปรเจ็คต์แบบเดียวกันที่ผ่านมาของ MOD อย่าง The New Majestic และ The Club ในไชน่าทาวน์ สิงคโปร์ หรือ Macallister Mansion ในปีนังเอง คงต้องข้ามช็อตไปรอดูเฟสสองของโครงการที่กำลังจะรีโนเวทโรงหนังเก่าให้เป็น event space เลยดีกว่า คงจะมีอะไรมันๆ ให้ดูกันมากกว่านี้
