OVER FOUR DECADES AGO, AN ITALIAN FURNITURE BRAND NAMED MAGIS WAS CONCEIVED UNDER ITS FOUNDER, EUGENIO PERAZZA’S PHILOSOPHY THAT FORESAW THE IMPORTANCE OF DESIGN AND ITS CONNECTION WITH PEOPLE’S WAYS OF LIFE.
Designed and manufactured in Italy, every MAGIS’ product has been developed using modern technology with artistic value attentively and intricately incorporated. What’s also interesting about this Venetian brand is its collaborations with worldrenowned designers that have given birth to a great number of memorable works from Nuovastep by Andries & Hiroko Van Onck, Bombo, the stool by Stefano Giovannoni, Air-Chair by Jasper Morrison, Chair_One by Konstantin Grcic, Steelwood Chair by the Bouroullec Brothers , Folly and Voido by British designer Ron Arad and Magis Proust by Alessandro Mendini to Spun by Thomas Heatherwick.
The Italian level of craftsmanship expertise and cultural roots are combined and transmitted through the mind of prominent French designer, Philippe Starck whose works include Zartan, which Starck and Eugeni Quitllet co-created back in 2012 as a parody of the character Tarzan. The work is intended to reflect the uncontaminated beauty of nature with the use of recycled, environmentally friendly and disposable natural materials. Zartan is modern in its form and functionality that is easy to use and digest with its design that breaks away from MAGIS’ brand identity as the creator of plastic chairs.
Starck created Big Will back in 2015. This long table stands out with its twowheeled legs. The table’s structure is made of solid and highly durable aluminum with a length that can be expanded to a maximum of three meters. It’s another design piece in which Starck is able to consummately integrate functionality into its sleek and sophisticated form.
Last but not least is Stanley, a design that dusts off the conventional perception of a Director’s Chair into a piece of furniture with a more modern touch. The chair’s structure is made of highly durable fiberglass while the seat and seatback are made of material called Plastitex ‘Thinny_New York’ that offers both flexibility and stability at the same time. Light in weight, Stanley can be folded into a fairly thin dimension, which helps to save storage space and is more convenient to move around. All and all, the design of Stanley exemplifies the interesting addition of aesthetic and functional values to an ordinary Director’s Chair.
