ABANDONED ONE IS A FLOWER INSTALLATION BY PHKA, A GROUP OF FLORAL DESIGNERS, SHOWCASED AT THE RECENTLY ENDED OF BANGKOK DESIGN WEEK
With the studio’s focus stretching across ‘space’ and ‘floral design and installation,’ this personal project sought an abandoned space; a place people turn away from, whether it be a dark and dingy area under a bridge or in the deserted street corners of Bangkok. The team finally came across ‘Cleopatra,’ a nightclub located in a shabby, grim-looking 80-year-old building as they questioned how the presence of flowers could transform people’s perceptions and attract them to this unlikely exhibition space.
Copious amounts of Red Anthurium filled the entire glass façade of the nightclub located in the Wongwien 22 neighborhood. It started off functioning as a cover, obscuring the building from being perceived while in reality, the visually striking installation draws the attention of every pair of eyes that walks passed the small alleyway. The wall of flowers blankets almost half of the front of the building’s first floor space and can be seen even from afar. Benches are intentionally provided at the front of the nightclub to mimic the presence of sex workers sitting and waiting for their customers. The Red Anthurium symbolizes not just a male genital and bad luck, but also possesses greater longevity that can withstand the surrounding environment and extensive period of the exhibition. While the owner was happy to welcome a new interesting activity into the place, the attention from festival goers and passersby caused income to decrease during the time when the installation was going on, primarily because clients were embarrassed to run into an army of design enthusiasts snapping photos of the work.
Something that is left behind, the nightclub where sex workers meet their clients, the male genital and deserted flowers on the side of the road, all are symbolic representations reinterpreted and interwoven into PHKA’s installation. Many of them are abstract and cannot be understood by taking just only one look. But for PHKA, flowers are a medium; a design tool with their own dimensions and complexity. It is perfectly normal for viewers to be unable to grasp the comprehensive meanings of such symbols simply because from one perspective, the beauty of flowers contributes a great deal to the promotion of the work, which is a significant part of the design process. By promoting, it encompasses the appeal of the work that draws people in, to look closely, to take photos with it, and share their experiences with the work on social media. Just like how a bug pollinates a flower in different parts of the world in a matter of seconds– free from all physical obstructions or boundaries.
ABANDONED ONE คือผลงานศิลปะจัดวางจาก PHKA (ผกา) กลุ่มนักออกแบบดอกไม้ ที่นำมาจัดแสดงในเทศกาลบางกอกดีไซน์วีคที่เพิ่งผ่านไป จุดโฟกัสของผกาชัดเจนอยู่ในเรื่องของ ‘สถานที่’ และ ‘การจัดดอกไม้’ ในโครงการส่วนตัวครั้งนี้พวกเขามองหาพื้นที่ที่ถูกทอดทิ้งที่คนไม่อยากจะเดินผ่าน อาจจะเป็นพื้นที่ใต้สะพานที่ดูเปลี่ยวเสี่ยงอันตราย หรือแหล่งเสื่อมโทรมต่างๆ ก่อนจะมาพบ ‘คลีโอพัตรา’ ที่เป็นสถานบริการบนอาคารเก่าแก่ทรุดโทรมอายุกว่า 80 ปี พวกเขาตั้งคำถามเอาไว้ว่าถ้ามีดอกไม้เข้าไปจัดวางในสถานที่แบบนั้นมันจะเปลี่ยนการรับรู้ของผู้คน และช่วยดึงดูดให้พวกเขาให้อยากเข้ามาในพื้นที่เหล่านี้ได้หรือไม่
ดอกหน้าวัวสีแดงถูกปูลงไปบนแผงกระจกหน้าอาคารอาบอบนวดชื่อดังย่านวงเวียน 22 เริ่มต้นคล้ายจะเป็นการปกปิดบดบังอาคารจากการมองเห็น แต่ความจริงกลายเป็นความโดดเด่นที่ดึงดูดทุกสายตาในถนนเล็กๆ สายนั้น ผนังดอกไม้ครอบคลุมเกือบครึ่งของชั้นที่ 1 หน้าตัวอาคาร ทำให้คนมองเห็นได้จากระยะไกล ม้านั่งที่วางไว้ด้านหน้าล้อเลียนกับพฤติกรรมการนั่งคอยของผู้ขายบริการ ดอกหน้าวัวที่นอกจากหมายความถึงอวัยวะเพศชายและสิ่งอัปมงคล ยังมีฟังก์ชั่นของความคงทนเหมาะสมกับสภาพแวดล้อมและระยะเวลาการจัดแสดง ตัวเจ้าของพื้นที่ก็ยินดีที่จะมีกิจกรรมใหม่ๆ เกิดขึ้น แต่ในทางกลับกันการได้รับความสนใจที่มากเกินไปดูจะเป็นผลเสียกับรายได้ของคลีโอพัตรา ผู้จัดการมากระซิบว่ายอดขายแอบตกลงเล็กน้อยในช่วงแสดงงาน สาเหตุเพราะลูกค้าคงจะรู้สึกเขินอายที่ต้องมาเจอกับกองทัพผู้เสพงานดีไซน์ยืนถ่ายรูปกันเต็มหน้าร้าน
บางสิ่งที่ถูกทอดทิ้ง สถานบริการ อวัยวะเพศชาย และดอกไม้ริมทาง เป็นสัญญะทางการออกแบบที่ผกาตีความแล้วนำมาเชื่อมโยงกันอยู่ในชิ้นงาน หลายอย่างเป็นนามธรรมที่ไม่อาจเข้าใจได้จากการดูเพียงครั้งเดียว แต่พวกเขามองว่าดอกไม้เป็นสื่อ เป็นเครื่องมืออย่างหนึ่งทางการออกแบบที่มีมิติและความซับซ้อนอยู่ในตัวเอง แม้ว่าตัวผู้ชมอาจจะไม่ได้สนใจที่จะทำความเข้าใจในความหมายเหล่านั้นอย่างครบถ้วนก็ดูจะไม่ใช่ปัญหาอะไร เพราะในอีกมุมหนึ่งความสวยงามของดอกไม้ได้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการช่วยประชาสัมพันธ์อันเป็นส่วนสำคัญของกระบวนการออกแบบ โดยทำหน้าที่ดึงดูดให้คนเข้าหาและถ่ายรูปร่วมกับมัน ส่งต่อข้อมูลออกไปในโลกโซเชียลเหมือนแมลงผึ้งที่มาเสพรสหวานของดอกไม้ แล้วแพร่กระจายเกสรที่เป็นหัวใจของผลงานออกไปในส่วนต่างๆ ของโลกได้อย่างรวดเร็วและไร้ขีดจำกัด
