BANGKOK HAS WELCOMED COUNTLESS FOREIGN FILM CREWS FROM HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS
like The Hangover Part II or the mainland China hit, Lost in Thailand, these films seem, from a foreign perspective, to depict Thailand as this exotic, chaotic place full of bizarre adventures. Having said that, it’s interesting to see that over the past few years, a number of foreign filmmakers use Thailand not only as a setting for their characters’ journeys but also actually tell the story of Thai people through much more profound aspects that are rich in social issues whether it be How To Win at Checkers (Every Time), The Road to Mandalay, Pop Aye or the latest one titled ‘Bangkok Nites’ by Japanese director, Kutsuya Tomita, who spent almost five years researching and developing the script.
The film tells the story of Luck, a top-ranked working girl at a bar on Thaniya Street who met Osawa, one of her clients and an ex-lover, several years back. Osawa is a burned-out young man who couldn’t find a proper job in his own country, causing him to flee to Thailand with the hopes of a better future. When the two meet again, an old flame is rekindled. When Osawa has to travel to Laos on a job assignment, Luck invites him to her Esan hometown before he crosses the border. Osawa’s traveling back and forth between Japan, Bangkok, the Esan region of Thailand, Laos and Pattaya reconciles the film’s narrative to cover issues that go beyond a sex worker and a client to the relationship of the two protagonists, functioning like a springboard that ends up pushing the film to encompass a much grander extent of content than anyone would have expected.
When in Esan and Laos, far away from the centers of power such as Bangkok and Japan, Osawa meets different groups of characters who question the current state of being of the Southeast Asian region, from the people in rural Esan who live an almost entirely different life from the people of Bangkok, a bunch of Hmong women working illegally in Thailand and the caucasian tourists, particularly the French guy who blabbers on about the past glory of his own nation. The most mindboggling encounter would be with Jit Phumisak’s ghost, Thailand’s most prominent communist and an important historical figure who occasionally shows up and talks to Osawa at night. The film releases itself from the boundary of a realist narrative as the story finds itself intertwined with historical characters. Revealed is the superimposed power structure of modern Imperialism that comes in the shape and form of a comparative depiction of a relationship between a Japanese businessman and a Thai working girl. The film digs into historical issues from the power of Old Europe in Southeast Asia and the America’s hunt for communists in Thailand during the Cold War all the way to Japan’s economic power that reigns over today’s Southeast Asian countries.
The name Bangkok Nites isn’t just about Bangkok. The metropolitan today places itself on a network of power with close ties to foreign capitals and exploitation of rural Thailand’s natural resources and labor. And while Bangkok Nites is a film about Thailand, made by a foreigner, it enables the Thai audience to look at their own country from an outsider’s perspective as we question how much we really know about ourselves, our own home and what it has become.
ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่มีกองถ่ายหนังต่างชาติเข้ามาใช้พื้นที่มากมาย หนังดังจากฮอลลีวู้ดอย่าง The Hangover 2 หรือหนังจีนแผ่นดินใหญ่อย่าง Lost in Thailand เป็นเหมือนภาพแทนของเมืองไทยในสายตาต่างชาติ เป็นดินแดนหฤหรรษ์อลหม่านที่ล้นเหลือไปด้วยรสชาติการผจญภัย แต่กระนั้นก็เป็นเรื่องน่าสนใจที่ว่าในช่วงปีหลัง ๆ ที่ผ่านมามีคนทำหนังต่างชาติหลายคนมาทำหนังในไทยแล้วไม่ได้ใช้แค่เมืองไทยเป็นเพียงฉากหลังให้ตัวละครต่างชาติมาท่องเที่ยวเฉย ๆ แต่หันจะมาเล่าเรื่องของคนไทยเองในแง่มุมที่ลึกซึ้งและรุ่มรวยไปด้วยประเด็นทางสังคม เช่น How To Win at Checkers (Every Time), The Road to Mandalay, Pop Aye และล่าสุดคือ Bangkok Nites หรือ กลางคืนที่บางกอก ของผู้กำกับชาวญี่ปุ่น คัตซึยะ โทมิตะ ที่ใช้เวลารีเสิร์ชและเขียนบทเกือบ 5 ปี
หนังบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของลักษณ์ สาวขายบริการตัวท็อปของบาร์แห่งหนึ่งในถนนธนิยะที่ไปพบเจอกับโอซาวะ ลูกค้าชาวญี่ปุ่นอดีตคนรักเก่าของเธอเมื่อหลายปีก่อน โอซาวะเป็นหนุ่มญี่ปุ่นตกอับที่ไม่มีโอกาสทำมาหากินในประเทศตัวเอง เลยลี้เร้นมาอยู่เมืองไทยด้วยความหวังถึงอนาคตที่ดีกว่า เมื่อทั้งสองเจอกันก็เหมือนถ่านไฟเก่าที่เกือบมอดพลันลุกไหม้ขึ้นอีกรอบ เมื่อโอซาวะได้รับมอบหมายงานให้ไปลาว ลักษณ์เลยชวนเขาแวะไปบ้านเกิดของเธอที่อีสานก่อนจะข้ามไปลาว การเดินทางไปและกลับระหว่างญี่ปุ่น-กรุงเทพ-ภาคอีสาน-ลาว-พัทยา ของโอซาวะได้คลี่ขยายเนื้อหาของหนังให้แผ่คลุมประเด็นต่าง ๆ ไปไกลกว่าเรื่องรักของสาวขายบริการและลูกค้า ความสัมพันธ์ของตัวละครหลักเป็นเหมือนสปริงบอร์ดที่พาตัวหนังทะยานไปสู่การเสนอเรื่องราวที่ไพศาลกว่าที่คาดคิดไว้
เมื่อตัวโอซาวะไปอยู่ที่อีสานและลาวอันเป็นพื้นที่ห่างไกลจากศูนย์กลางอำนาจอย่างญี่ปุ่นและกรุงเทพ ฯ โอซาวะได้ปะทะพบเจอกับกลุ่มตัวละครที่ชวนตั้งคำถามกับความเป็นไปหลายสิ่งของภูมิภาคอุษาคเนย์ ทั้งชาวบ้านในชนบทอีสานที่ความเป็นอยู่ต่างจากผู้คนในกรุงเทพฯ หญิงสาวแรงงานชาวม้งที่หนีมาทำงานในไทย กลุ่มนักท่องเที่ยวตะวันตกผิวขาวโดยเฉพาะหนุ่มฝรั่งเศสที่พร่ำเพ้อถึงอดีตจักรวรรดิอันเคยรุ่งเรืองของชาติตัวเอง หรือที่เหวอสุด ๆ คงเป็นผีจิตร ภูมิศักด์! คอมมิวนิสต์ในประวัติศาสตร์ไทยที่ปรากฎตัวมาพูดคุยกับโอซาวะในบางคืน ตัวหนังปล่อยให้ตัวเองหลุดลอยไปจากหมุดของเรื่องเล่าที่สมจริง เพื่อพาเนื้อเรื่องไปผสานซ้อนแทรกกับตัวละครทางประวัติศาสตร์และเผยให้เห็นโยงใยอำนาจที่ทับซ้อนกันไปมาของอาณานิคมยุคใหม่ผ่านภาพเปรียบของนักธุรกิจญี่ปุ่นกับสาวขายบริการชาวไทย หนังขุดเสาะประเด็นทางประวัติศาสตร์ของทั้งอาณานิคมยุโรปยุคเก่าในภูมิภาคอุษาคเนย์ จักรวรรดิอเมริกากับการปราบปรามฝ่ายซ้ายในไทยในยุคสงครามเย็น และจักรวรรดิทางเศรษฐกิจของญี่ปุ่นที่เข้ามาในอุษาคเนย์ในปัจจุบัน
จากชื่อหนัง กลางคืนที่บางกอก จึงไม่ได้เกี่ยวกับแค่บางกอกเท่านั้น บางกอกทุกวันนี้เป็นเมืองที่วางตัวเองอยู่บนเครือข่ายอำนาจที่แอบอิงกับหลายพื้นที่ ทั้งเงินจากต่างชาติ และทรัพยากรทั้งธรรมชาติและแรงงานจากพื้นที่อันยากจนในชาติตัวเอง Bangkok Nites เป็นหนังเกี่ยวกับไทยที่แม้ว่าจะทำโดยคนนอก แต่ก็สามารถทำให้ผู้ชมชาวไทยมองประเทศไทยด้วยสายตาคนนอกเช่นกัน เรารู้จักบ้านตัวเองแค่ไหน และเรารู้จักตัวเราเองในทุกวันนี้อย่างไร ?
