WHY DO YOU LIKE THESE HIDEOUS LOOKING BUILDINGS SO MUCH!?
This is the one question Christopher Beanland is frequently asked. It is kind of strange that the feeling people have towards Brutalist architecture is either love or hate. So what exactly is the charm? Is it its uncompromising nature? Since when did the exposure of materials and proficient use of concrete of the time period start invading the world’s architecture? The questions we wonder about are answered and explained succinctly in the preface of this book.
‘Concrete Concept: Brutalist Buildings Around the World’ brings together 50 iconic Brutalist buildings from around the world designed and constructed between the 1950s and 1970s (except the last building, of which construction was completed in 2004). Turning to the last pages of the book, the readers can see a world map showing different locations where these buildings are located. The majority of them are in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, with some being scattered on the east coast of the United States. But what we find to be very interesting is the bizarre looking buildings in South and Central American and African countries such as Argentina, Costa Rica and the Ivory Coast.
Beanland gives an interesting conclusion about how architecture today often compromises. It is true that these buildings are useful and important but no one really wants to write a book about such compromising architecture. The vision for the future from the past is what this book is all about, according to Beanland.
