THE ARTISTS CALL THIS WORK ‘EL MACRO MURAL BARRIO DE PALMITAS,’ WITH THE PROJECT’S EXPENSES BEING FULLY FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT
There are many local governments around the world that have used street art to add that unique characteristic to their cities and urban spaces, and there are also several other cities that never seem to get tired of going after and erasing graffiti from their public spaces. Pachuca’s Las Palmitas neighborhood in Mexico falls into the first category.
This particular piece of graffiti is the work of alocal street art group that calls itself German Crew. It utilizes 209 houses in the neighborhood as can-vases with the hopes of using art to resolve violenceamongst teenagers. The result is a gigantic mural painting with a total space of 20,000 square metersthat uses 20,000 million liters of color. The artists call this work ‘El Macro Mural Barrio de Palmitas,’ with the project’s expenses being fully funded by the government. The area was once notorious forconstant shootouts between gangs and, with something so spectacular emerging and becoming a part of the community, smearing the walls with blood will hopefully not be as easy as it once was.
