VOORLINDEN MUSEUM

Officially opened in September 2016, Voorlinden Museum is the Netherlands’ latest museum located in Wassenaar, a small town unheard of by many. This private museum was built with personal funding from Joop van Caldenborgh, an art-enthusiast/chemical factory owner whose dream was to build a world-class museum in order to exhibit the artwork he has been collecting since he was young. His intention is reflected through the intricate and accomplished design of the architecture by architect, Dirk Jan Postel.

The architecture’s massive glass walls fully open the space to the landscape of a hillside, lake and forest garden as these natural elements are incorporated in to complement the art viewing experience. The collection is packed with works of spectacular visuals from Ellsworth Kelly’s vivid aesthetic, René Magritte’s cloud painting, Ron Mueck’s spookily hyperrealistic sculpture, all the way to the superstar artist, Damien Hirst’s cigarette butt installation. The most impressive piece goes to Richard Serra’s massive walk-in steel sculpture and Leandro Erlich’s simulation of the underwater world, ‘Swimming Pool’ that makes it appear as if a group of viewers are trapped under the aquatic mass while another group is put in the position of spectators. Simply speaking, Voorlinden Museum makes art viewing so much fun. It’s the kind of experience that brings back the joy of being a kid all over again.
