Another highly anticipated international design competition that designers from around the world look forward to every year, Golden Pin Design Award, continues its long-standing history over the span of four decades. Hosted by Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs together with Taiwan Design Research Institute, the competition aims to support and encourage creators from every design discipline within the creative industry with outstanding works and approaches, not just from Taiwan but countries in regions worldwide.
Themed UPLOAD, the Golden Pin Design Award 2021 welcomed over 8,000 entries from 28 countires around the world. After an intense selection process by the judging panel of the preliminary round held in July, the finalists were chosen and the winners were finally announced in December. 31 winning projects from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, the United States, Japan, Singapore and Thailand brought home the Golden Pin Design Award Best Design, including two winners of Special Annual Award of Golden Pin Design Awards, three Best Design awards of Golden Pin Concept Design Award category and one winner of Special Annual Award of Golden Pin Concept Design Award.
The 31 works picked as the winners of Golden Pin Design Award 2021 were from Product Design, Communication Design and Integration Design category and nine winning projects from the Spatial Design category, which included works by architecture firms from Taiwan and Singapore, as well as Thailand’s Asha Farmstay by Creative Crews and PANNAR Sufficiency Economic and Agriculture Learning Center by Vin Varavarn Architects. Creative Crews renovated an old traditional Thai house into a homestay accommodation, which sees an impressive conservation of original structure and fusion of contemporary architectural elements designed to correspond with today’s users’ behaviors, functional demands and lifestyles. With PANNAR Sufficiency Economic and Agriculture Learning Center, Vin Varavarn Architects incorporated the use of several local materials into the design, especially the bamboo roof structure with additional functional ability that can collect and supply rainwater to the designated water storage during droughts, exemplifying architectural projects with distinguished environmental consciousness and merits.
Some of our personal favorites are such as Pingtung Public Library by Taiwan-based firm MAYU architects. The renovation of library building sees an interesting insertion of open space that functions as the lobby and connects various parts of the interior program and urban spaces, collectively creating a new public space for the city. For Warehouse No. 20, 21, 22 & 23 Renewal Project: Reappearance of the Historical Workshop, Willy Yang Architects & Planners (Taiwan) chose to reveal the building’s original structure and revive the spirit of the past with lighting design and presence of steel structure that accentuate the contrast of the project’s architectural and spatial elements, making it even more distinctive.
Another work that stands out is Cloister House by Formwerkz Architects (Singapore), a residential design project where the architect has facilitated the living space on a ‘terrace’ to serve as spatial interface that connects the house to the surrounding natural environment. Each of the nine zones of the house has its own courtyard with design characteristics and attributes that reflect each family’s identity and requirements.
Last but not least, big congratulations to all the winners of Golden Pin Design Award 2021.
