SOMEONE ONCE SAID THAT “HAVING KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT IMAGINATION MAKES ONE NOTHING MORE THAN A MEMORIZER WHO DOES THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AGAIN, AND HAVING IMAGINATION WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE MAKES ONE NOTHING MORE THAN A FUTILE DREAMER.” 

Someone once said that “having knowledge without imagination makes one nothing more than a memorizer who does the same things over and over again, and having imagination without knowledge makes one nothing more than a futile dreamer.” But what if knowledge and imagination are interwoven into one? The result could be the birth of a thinker who could change the world forever. ‘The Unusual Football Field’ is a product of creativity and an unconventional reconceptualization of space. Standing in the midst of urban Bangkok’s squalid Klong Toey Community, the project developed by progressive real estate developer, AP (Thailand) is a product from the heart and mind of thinkers; the aspiring enlightened dreamers who overcome limitations and bring new possibilities to the world.

The Unusual Football Field was created out of the concept and philosophy of AP space, in which the AP Design Lab team’s approach to the revitalization, adaptation and integration of the site’s original condition aimed to create new functionalities that not only resonate with but also preserve the nature of the community. There are many reasons why this urban oasis is special and interesting. In addition to the brilliant reinvention of space that gives birth to the L/zigzag-shaped, communal sports and multi-functional ground, which redefines the convention of a symmetrical football field as we know it, what this project embodies is the maximized potential and ability of creativity and design knowledge, expressed and manifested at the right place and the right time. It not only cultivates but also nurtures the spirit of a community, and it does so without disturbing the existing physicality of the surrounding environment. There is nothing ostentatious about its presence. It causes no dramatic impact to people’s ways of life, just positive functional effects that encourage interaction and participation between members of the community, especially the young.

The Unusual Football Field was recently chosen by Time Magazine as one of the 25 Best Inventions of 2016 alongside innovative technological products, the biofortification of potatoes and new concepts of residential developments from around the world. แนวคิดของ The Unusual Football Field ถูกเรียกว่า AP Space ซึ่งทีม AP Design Lab เลือกใช้วิธีการฟื้นฟู ปรับเปลี่ยน และบูรณาการจากสิ่งที่มีอยู่เพื่อให้พื้นที่ทิ้งร้างเกิดหน้าที่ใช้สอยแบบใหม่ โดยพัฒนาให้สอดคล้องไปกับลักษณะพื้นที่ในชุมชนคลองเตย ขณะที่ยังคงรักษาสิ่งที่มีอยู่เดิมเอาไว้ให้สมบูรณ์ที่สุด จุดน่าสนใจของโอเอซิสในรูปแบบลานกีฬาและลานอเนกประสงค์สำหรับการจัดกิจกรรมสันทนาการแห่งนี้ ไม่ได้อยู่ที่การทะลายข้อจำกัดของพื้นที่และฉีกกฎเกณฑ์ของสนามฟุตบอลรูปทรงสมมาตรแบบเดิมๆ ด้วยการสร้างสนามฟุตบอลแบบ L-shape และซิกแซกเพียงอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น แต่คือการที่ศักยภาพของความคิดสร้างสรรค์และความรู้ด้านออกแบบถูกนำมาใช้อย่างเต็มความสามารถ ถูกที่ ถูกทาง และถูกเวลา ซึ่งนับเป็นการเติมความชุ่มชื่นและชีวิตชีวาให้แก่ชุมชน โดยไม่กระเทือนกับผังเดิมของพื้นที่ ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงการดำเนินชีวิตของผู้คนในย่านอย่างเอิกเกริก แต่ให้ผลในเชิงบวกในแง่การใช้สอย เลยไปจนถึงกระตุ้นให้เกิดการมีส่วนร่วมของผู้คน โดยเฉพาะเด็กๆ มากขึ้น
