With Khao Kor’s sea of fog only appearing in the morning, designing a space for travellers to spend their afternoon after a morning of sightseeing the area is the key behind the design of Livist Resort in Phetchabun province of Thailand. This latest project by POAR | Patchara + Ornnicha ARchitects is interesting not only for its architectural details but the common area, the circular outdoor pool whose shape reminds one of a rice bowl that invites visitors to enjoy the afternoon swim is also one of the highlights.
The architects are aware of the rather blazing afternoon sun to which the outdoor activities in the area would be exposed. The pool is, therefore, designed to situate towards the hotel’s western court. Fourteen planters in an inverted pyramid shape are installed in a cluster at the center of the pool, with the base extending 2-3 meters from the axis. The projected mass helps filter the sun coming through and provides a lovely shade. The Bottlebrush trees are small in size but give the needed leafiness to protect the pool from the sun. The trees’ foliage isn’t too dense, making the maintenance easier. The trees also provide pool users a sense of privacy, shielding them from being visually accessed from the hotel’s upper floors.
Apart from the upside-down pyramid-shaped planters and choice of trees, other design elements POAR came up with include the use of marble as the pool’s flooring material due to the seamless texture it offers. The fact that marble can be cut into smaller pieces makes it a material suitable for the pool’s curved surface while lessening the risk of the marble tiles’ broken edges hurting users’ feet. The installation faces each planter in different directions to facilitate a diverse space and experience when users move around the pool. Despite its reasonably small size, the design is packed with concepts.
