ในมิวสิควิดีโอของ BLACKPINK เราสังเกตเห็นลิซ่าและเพื่อนๆ ในวงจีบนิ้วส่งมินิฮาร์ทให้ผู้ชมอยู่หลายรอบ สำหรับเราอาจจะไม่ได้สังเกตอะไรเป็นพิเศษสักเท่าไหร่ แต่กับวัยรุ่นยุคใหม่หลายคนสีสันลวดลายบนเล็บซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่เล็กจิ๋วปลายนิ้วของป๊อปสตาร์ทั้งหลายเป็นสิ่งที่น่าสนใจอย่างยิ่ง ในประเทศเกาหลีช่างทำเล็บถือเป็นอาชีพรายได้งาม หากฝีมือดีก็จะได้รับการยอมรับในฐานะศิลปินและมีผู้กดติดตามเป็นจำนวนมาก น่าสนใจที่คนเราทำเล็บโดยไม่ได้คาดหวังให้ใครได้เห็นแต่เป็นไปเพื่อความพึงพอใจส่วนตัวล้วนๆ การเอาใจใส่กับพื้นที่เล็กๆ ที่ส่งอิทธิพลใหญ่หลวงต่อความมั่นใจของใครหลายคนจึงดูจะไม่ใช่เรื่องเล็กๆ

Colorlab, Nail Design Studio คือร้านทำเล็บในย่านแจ้งวัฒนะ เป็นโครงการที่ออกแบบโดย พีรยา ศุภสิทธิ์ สถาปนิกหญิงจบจาก Rhode Island School of Design และมีประสบการณ์ทำงานที่สหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศญี่ปุ่น ด้วยความตั้งใจที่จะใช้แสงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวัสดุในการออกแบบ เธอเฝ้าสังเกตแสงธรรมชาติและทดสอบกับแก้วที่มีความโค้งหนาบางไม่สม่ำเสมอ มองดูการหักเหของแสงและเงาที่เกิดขึ้นอยู่นาน ก่อนตัดสินใจใช้บล็อกแก้วเป็นส่วนประกอบหลักในการจับแสงที่เราไม่สามารถสัมผัสได้มาเป็นส่วนสำคัญในตัวอาคาร

นอกจากการจัดสรรพื้นที่ขนาด 52 ตารางเมตร ให้รองรับงานบริการทำเล็บแบบครบวงจรแล้ว เธอยังต้องการสร้างบุคลิกให้กับตัวอาคารเพื่อมอบประสบการณ์ที่น่าจดจำแก่ลูกค้า พื้นที่ขนาดกระทัดรัดจึงกลายเป็นความท้าทาย มีการกำหนดให้ก่ออิฐบล็อคแก้วตรงผนังอาคารฝั่งตะวันตกทั้งแถบ เพื่อเปิดรับแสงให้เข้ามาภายในได้อย่างเต็มที่ โดยอุปมาแล้วผนังบล็อคแก้วเป็นเหมือนเป็นผืนผ้าใบขนาดใหญ่ นอกจากช่วยในการกรองแสงแล้วพื้นผิวแก้วยังแสดงลวดลายของท้องฟ้า พุ่มไม้ที่กำลังเคลื่อนไหว รวมถึงพระอาทิตย์ที่กำลังจะตกดิน กลายเป็นภาพศิลปะนามธรรมที่เลียนแบบสภาพแวดล้อมของตัวมันเองซึ่งเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตลอดเวลา

ถึงแม้ว่าแสงแดดและเงาจะเป็นตัวแสดงหลักในการออกแบบ แต่การใช้แสงไฟในการทำงานกับเล็บต้องจัดให้เฉพาะจุดสำหรับช่างแต่ละคนได้สามารถควบคุมปริมาณแสงที่เหมาะสมกับความต้องการได้ ภายในเป็นสีขาวสะอาดตาประกอบกับสีตามธรรมชาติของวัสดุก่อสร้างอื่น เรียกความสนใจแต่พองามด้วยฝ้าเพดานดัดเป็นแนวโค้งอ่อนๆ ช่วยให้บรรยากาศดูสงบ และสร้างความต่อเนื่องให้กับพื้นที่ทั้งหมด แผนผังการใช้งานจะค่อนข้างยืดหยุ่น พื้นที่จัดสรรไว้สำหรับส่วนพักคอยและงานบริการหลากประเภท ห้องพักของพนักงานล้อมรอบด้วยแผ่นโลหะผิวด้าน รวมถึงมีห้องน้ำซ่อนตัวอยู่ตรงทางเดินเล็กๆ ด้านหลังอ่างล้างมือที่หล่อจากคอนกรีตมีกระจกเงาอยู่ด้านหลังเพื่อไว้สำหรับลูกค้าได้ใช้ส่องมือของตัวเอง ช่วยเน้นย้ำให้เราตระหนักว่ากำลังอยู่ในร้านทำเล็บ

ในตอนเริ่มต้น ทั้งหมดนี้เป็นแนวคิดที่ร่างอยู่บนกระดาษซึ่งไม่อาจคาดเดาได้ว่าทำออกมาจริงๆ แล้ว space ของตัวอาคารจะให้ความรู้สึกอย่างไร หรือแสงเงาที่ส่องผ่านบล็อกแก้วเข้ามาในตัวอาคารนั้นจะมีความชัดเจนใกล้เคียงกับสิ่งที่แสงเงาที่ทำการทดสอบมาก่อนหน้านี้หรือไม่ ด้วยงบประมาณและเวลาที่จำกัด พีรยาได้เพียงแต่ทำ mock-up ที่มีขนาดเล็กกว่างานจริง และด้วยความละเอียดอ่อนของแสงเงาที่ค่อนข้างยากในการประเมินใน scale และพื้นที่จริง เธอจึงเกาะติดพื้นที่และควบคุมงานอย่างใกล้ชิดเพื่อให้ผลลัพธ์ใกล้เคียงกับแบบที่เธอคิดไว้ “..การได้อยู่ในพื้นที่ก่อสร้างมันสร้างความรู้สึกประหลาดบางอย่าง เหมือนกับการที่ได้พบใครบางคนเป็นครั้งแรกแต่กลับรู้สึกสนิทสนมคุ้นเคยเป็นอย่างยิ่ง” เธอกล่าว

ดูเหมือนว่าผลงานขนาดเล็กแต่มีโอกาสได้ลงมือทำอย่างเต็มที่จะมีส่วนช่วยสร้างความมั่นใจให้กับนักออกแบบหน้าใหม่ เปลือกผนังแก้วใสที่มีลวดลายของแสงอาทิตย์และท้องฟ้าจรดลงไปบนพื้นผิว ถือเป็นการใช้ประโยชน์จากสิ่งที่จับต้องไม่ได้นำมาช่วยเพิ่มคุณค่าของพื้นที่ในโครงการได้อย่างน่าสนใจ เป็นความเหมาะเจาะพอดีสำหรับผู้ใช้งานที่จะได้รับประสบการณ์ที่มีลักษณะเฉพาะ บางอย่างที่อาจจะไม่พูดออกมาชัดเจนนักแต่สามารถรรับรู้ได้ ซึ่งก็เพียงพอแล้วสำหรับหน้าที่ของสถาปัตยกรรมสักแห่งจะสามารถสื่อสารเนื้อหาสาระของกิจกรรมในอาคารให้จับใจผู้ที่เข้ามาใช้งานได้

For mature viewers, the ‘mini hearts’ that Lisa and her bandmates playfully give in one of BLACKPINK’s music videos may not exactly strike one as something of particular interest that would require elaborate observation, but for the younger generation, the colors and details on their nails and the tiny bit of space on the tips of the fingers of these K-Pop superstars are worth every bit of one’s attention. In South Korea, nail specialists are known as a profession of hefty income. A well-known manicurist means A-list celebrity clientele and an impressive number of social media followers. It’s interesting how most of the time, people have their nails done for their own personal pleasure and don’t expect others to see them. It’s attention given to such a small part of one’s entire physical being but turns out to have a significant impact on a person’s self-confidence. So these tiny spaces on our fingertips may not be as small as we thought they were.

Colorlab, Nail Design Studio is a nail service establishment located in Chaengwattana. Designed by Peeraya Suphasidh, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate and architect with professional experiences practicing in the United States and Japan, the studio materialized from the designer’s brilliant use of light as a key element of the design. Suphasidh closely observed the direction of the natural light within the space and tested the effects these lights had on glass of various volumes and varying thicknesses. The architect spent a significant amount of time watching light and shadows change their courses. The decision to use glass blocks was later made with an intention for the material to help catch the untouchable presence of light, which serves as one of the elemental components of both the building and the interior space.

Apart from designing the 52-square-meter functional space to accommodate the nail studio’s comprehensives services, the architect intended to create a sense of character within the building to facilitate a memorable user experience for the clients. The limited space became a challenge that she worked out by defining the boundary for the glass blocks that ended up taking over the entire western wall to embrace the presence of natural light. Metaphorically, the glass block wall functions as a massive canvas that helps filter the sunlight and projects the colors of the sky, the moving foliage and the beautiful sunset hours, creating constantly changing works of art whose abstract aesthetics mimic the changing course of its own surrounding nature.

With natural light and shadow acting as the key elements of the design, the manicure and pedicure services require specific lighting design of their own for each technician needed to be able to control a desirable amount of light in order to work their craft. The interior looks white and clean and complements the natural colors of the other construction materials well, with certain details demanding a perfect amount of attention such as the slightly curved ceiling that brings a sense of serenity to the overall ambiance and facilitates a nice flow of space for the entire program. The floor plan is quite flexible with different spaces provided for waiting patrons and other types of services, as well as the staffs’ rooms. Suphasidh chose Matte aluminum sheets to be the cladding materials for these areas. A restroom was hidden in a small walkway and, installed on the wall behind the cast concrete sink, is a set of mirrors for customers to take a closer look at their hands, reemphasizing the spirit and characteristics of the space as a nail studio.

In the beginning, all these details were only ideas drafted on paper. No one was able to provide a precise outcome of the vibe and feel the space would be able to create or foresee how close the effect of light illuminating through the glass blocks would be to what had been tested beforehand. Nevertheless, with rather limited time and budget, Suphasidh created a mockup with the scale being relatively smaller than the actual work. The details and unpredictable elements of natural light and shadow make it hard to evaluate the actual scale and space. And for that matter, Suphasidh works very closely on site with the contractor and builders to achieve the final result that is the closest to what she had in mind. “Being at the site, it gives this strange experience of meeting someone for the first time but feeling a great sense of closeness and familiarity.”

It seems that a small project with full creative control works wonders as a dose of inspiration for the new face architect. The surface of the glass block wall is painted with sunlight and the colorful presence of the sky as the material makes the best use of the untouchable elements and adds an interesting sense of value and effects to the program. It is with these perfectly complementary ingredients that users are brought a specific spatial experience, not tangibly expressed but discernible to the senses. Perhaps that is enough in terms of what one can expect from a piece of architecture and the role it plays; the ability to communicate the essences and purpose of its existence and enchant those who use it.
