CONTINUUM: ACCULTURATING

OCT 28 – DEC 17, 2016
THE ART CENTRE, CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY

At the heart of this exhibition is the idea of acculturation, or an attempt of a cultural outsider to adapt to the central or a new cultural environment that requires cultural absorption and survival skills, and how a newcomer builds social status. This idea also appropriately applies to the creative process of contemporary art.

The world of contemporary art is about adapting to novel things and identifying unidentified cultures through learning about others’ behaviors, attitudes and thoughts as represented in cultural products. Artists are therefore a kind of people who are quick to adaptation to a new environment. This has led to the switching of perspectives between insiders and outsiders and the discussion on the territory and mainstream culture of contemporary art.

Featuring artists: Jakkai Siributr, Jedsada Tangtrakulwong and Piyatat Hemmatat.

“Continuum: Acculturating” aims to exchange ideas and create a platform for mutual learning in the context of cultural integration and diverse perspectives, which are key to contemporary art in the 21st century.
