BANGKOK LAYERS

and Bangkok’s local folklores reflected through the contemporary lives of the city’s inhabitants and retells them in different forms of art from painting and crafts to video art. History is about those who are still alive; a fictional narrative that holds the power to the way the truth is told. Several artists use their works to convey this fact such as ‘Insight’ (2018), a work of video art by Kaensan Rattanasomrerk that tells the story of local beliefs surrounding the Erawan Shrine along with the artist’s own memories about the day when the bombing took place in 2015 inside the shrine. Warawut Srisopark’s ‘Bangkok Governor’ (2018) questions the country’s mainstream history with a painting of a French diplomat dressed in white Hindu attire. The work somewhat summarizes a certain part of the message the exhibition is trying to send out by getting people to question and rethink their perceptions towards the past and ongoing history of Bangkok.

It seems like Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts & Culture have managed to create another interesting exhibition. Bangkok Layers was held between the 4th and 22nd of April 2018 at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre as a part of Topography of Mirror Cities, which takes place in 6 Asian cities (Bangkok, Jakarta, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka and Taipei).

นิทรรศการหยิบยกเอาประวัติศาสตร์ทั้งกระแสหลักกระแสรอง ความเชื่อท้องถิ่นในกรุงเทพฯ ที่สะท้อนออกมาผ่านวิถีชีวิตของคนกรุงในปัจจุบันมาบอกเล่าใหม่ในรูปแบบของงานศิลปะ ตั้งแต่จิตรกรรม หัตถกรรม ไปจนถึงวิดีโออาร์ต แน่นอนว่าประวัติศาสตร์เป็นเรื่องของคนปัจจุบัน และเป็นเรื่องแต่งที่กุมอำนาจในการบอกเรื่องราวของคนในปัจจุบันได้อย่างแนบสนิทไร้ข้อกังขา ศิลปินหลายคนในนิทรรศการสื่อสารความจริงข้อนี้ผ่านผลงาน เช่น หยั่ง (Insight, 2018) วิดีโออาร์ตของ แก่นสาร รัตนสมฤกษ์ ที่ถ่ายทอดความเชื่อท้องถิ่นอย่างศาลพระพรหมเอราวัณ สถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่ตั้งอยู่บริเวณย่านการค้าสำคัญของกรุงเทพฯ คู่ไปกับความทรงจำของศิลปินในวันที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ระเบิดขึ้นที่ศาลแห่งนั้นเมื่อปี 2015 หรือผลงานของ วราวุธ ศรีโสภาค ภาพเจ้าเมืองบางกอก (Bangkok Governor, 2018) ในคราบของทูตชาวฝรั่งเศสสวมลอมพอกสีขาว (เครื่องแต่งกายของพราหมณ์ในไทย) ตัวภาพจิตรกรรมนั้นกำลังพยายามตั้งคำถามกับประวัติศาสตร์กระแสหลักของไทย และในเวลาเดียวกัน ภาพนี้ก็อาจจะเป็นผลงานที่สรุปใจความส่วนหนึ่งของนิทรรศการได้ เพราะมันสะกิดผู้ชมให้ตั้งคำถามและเปลี่ยนมุมมองใหม่กับประวัติศาสตร์ของกรุงเทพฯ ตั้งแต่อดีตถึงปัจจุบัน

เป็นอีกครั้งที่ Baan Noorg Collaborative Arts & Culture ทำนิทรรศการออกมาได้อย่างน่าสนใจ บางกอกหลอกชั้น (Bangkok Layers) จัดแสดงระหว่างวันที่ 4 – 22 เมษายน 2561 ที่หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในโครงการ Topography of Mirror Cities ที่ถูกจัดขึ้นใน 6 เมืองใหญ่ในเอเชีย คือ กรุงเทพฯ จาการ์ตา พนมเปญ กัวลาลัมเปอร์ ธากา และไทเป น่าติดตามว่านิทรรศการเวอร์ชั่นเมืองอื่นๆ เขาหยิบเอาประเด็นอะไรมาถกกัน
