AFTER THE RENOVATION THAT RESULTED IN A 12-YEAR HIATUS, BASILICA PALLADIANA IN VICENZA, NORTH-EASTERN ITALY, HAS OFFICIALLY REOPENED, MARKING ITS RETURN WITH SOME PRETTY EXCITING EXHIBITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE.
The first exhibition features over 20 works, both completed and ongoing, of David Chipperfield Architects. Portrayed is the firm’s architectural modus operandi that through vigorous consideration of culture and history, viewers are able to see the stories and processes behind the conception of each project, from sketches to large-scale models, accompanied by thoughtfully yet minimally designed graphics presented throughout the exhibition space. Browsing the exhibition grounds, one realizes the integrated elements of simplicity, intricateness and modern architectural concepts and technology in their works such as the renovation of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue National galerie where the tenet behind the original work was kept intact. An old and a new sketchbook are put on display next to the area where the project is exhibited to reflect the differences in concept brought about by the new design. The Valentino flagship store is another interesting work whose spectacular interior design is the result of the homogeneous use of grey Terrazzo. The project’s design process and prototype model are exhibited, allowing for viewers to better grasp the meaning and ideal behind the use of the material. There are several other interesting projects featured in the exhibition, from the masterplan of the Royal Academy of Arts in London to the IMPACT Centre in Edinburgh. ‘David Chipperfield Architects Works 2018’ will be showcased at Basilica Palladiana until the 2nd of September 2018.
