MEET GRAHAM

Simply speaking, ‘Graham’ is a humanoid sculpture created from the imagination of an Australian sculptor, Patricia Piccinini, who conducted collaborative research with Royal Melbourne Hospital’s trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield and Monash University Accident Research Centre’s crash investigation expert Dr. David Logan for the latest campaign of Australia’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC) that aims to intensify awareness and concern over the prevention of transport accidents. ‘Graham’ is a realistic, interactive depiction of what a human being might look like if they had evolved to survive a crash. His elongated feet and legs make it easier for him to jump out and escape an oncoming car. His larger ribs and airbag-like muscles act as a shield that lessens the force from a crash. His neck is replaced by a set of brace-like structures that connect his body to the chubby face with a flat nose and pushed-out cheeks whereas the skull’s shape is not that much different from a helmet that fully covers and protects his brain.

Far from normal, ‘Graham’ is the future most of us do not wish to evolve into. At the end of the day, what the work has accomplished is that it helps TAC to reach its objective of increasing people’s awareness of the importance of street safety. To think that one has to possess such bizarre physical appearance only to survive transport accidents, keeping the roads safe and accident-free sounds like a million times better plan.

‘Graham’ คือมนุษย์จากจินตนาการของประติมากรชาวออสเตรเลี่ยน Patricia Piccinini ที่ได้วิจัยหาข้อมูลร่วมกับแผนกผ่าตัดของโรงพยาบาล Royal Melbourne และภาควิชาอุบัติเหตุของมหาวิทยาลัยในเมลเบิร์น เพื่อที่จะสร้างจิตสำนึกและความใส่ใจต่อการป้องกันอุบัติเหตุบนถนนให้กับโครงการรณรงค์ของ TAC (Transport Accident Commission) ‘Graham’ จึงเป็นเหมือนหุ่นจำลองของมนุษย์ที่มีความสมจริงมากที่สุดบนสมมติฐานที่ว่าหากเราจะวิวัฒนาการเป็นคนที่จะรอดชีวิตเมื่อถูกรถชน เราจะต้องมีรูปร่างหน้าตาอย่างไร ซึ่งคำตอบก็คือแบบ ‘Graham’ นี่เอง ที่ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเท้าและขาที่ยาวขึ้นเพื่อช่วยในการสปริงตัว ซี่โครงที่ใหญ่ขึ้นเปรียบเสมือนเกราะกำบังที่จะลดแรงกระแทกด้วยเนื้อที่มีรูปทรงคล้าย airbag แทรกตัวอยู่ในทุกๆ ซี่ และคอที่หายไป แต่แทนที่ด้วยซี่โครงที่ต่อขึ้นไปจนถึงใบหน้า จมูกแบนๆ แต่แก้มพองๆ ฝังอยู่ในกะโหลกที่จะมีรูปร่างไม่ต่างกับหมวกกันน็อคเพื่อครอบและป้องกันสมองอันเป็นส่วนที่สำคัญที่สุดของมนุษย์

ทั้งหมดนี้ทำให้ ‘Graham’ ดูไกลจากความปกติมนุษย์ที่ก็คงจะมีน้อยคนนักที่จะอยากให้เกิดวิวัฒนาการขึ้นมาจริงๆ และผลลัพธ์ตรงนี้ก็คงจะตรงกับความต้องการของ TAC ในการรณรงค์เพื่อความตื่นตัวต่อความปลอดภัยบนท้องถนนครั้งนี้ เพราะถ้ามนุษย์เราจะต้องมีองค์ประกอบรูปร่างหน้าตาที่พิลึกพิลั่นขนาดนี้เพียงเพื่อจะรอดชีวิตจากอุบัติเหตุแล้วล่ะก็ ขอกลับไปแก้ที่ต้นเหตุของความอันตรายจากการขับรถก็น่าจะเป็นอะไรที่รื่นรมย์กว่าล้านเปอร์เซ็นต์
