This film presents how the values of architects have changed over the past years through interviews with internationally acclaimed Japanese architects and presenting rich visual content about their work.
In 1982, there was a P3 (Public-Private Partnership) conference held in Charlottesville, Virginia. The conference, held at the University of Virginia’s Rotunda Building, concerned the topic of public-private co-investment in basic infrastructure and public services. There were many global-level architects who joined to confer about the future of design and architecture. For Japan, there were three architects in attendance: Arata Isozaki and two then young and relatively unknown names, Tadao Ando and Toyo Ito. At that time, no one realized that the latter two would become globally famous architects.
30 years later, those three architects are willing to discuss and share their stories of being a leading figure behind Japan’s modern architecture. They also shine a light on and offer a behind-the-scenes look at their arduous profession, in which they, before gaining success, had to face many tests and challenges along the way. Those tests and challenges included working during the time of rapidly growing capitalism, the following economic crisis, how said crisis brought their names international fame, and how those challenges allow for us to re-inspect the roles of public architecture.
The documentary film “Inside Architecture: A Challenge To Japanese Society” shares not only these three architects’ works along with their interviews but also gives voice to comments from numerous leading western architects such as Peter Eisenman, Charles Jencks and Rem Koolhaas. These comments help the audience to understand different perspectives on Japan’s modern architecture, from those formed in the past to the present and future.
For those interested, the film will be screened at Alliance Française Bangkok’s 3rd-floor Auditorium on the 18th of November 2018 (Sunday) at 13:30-15:00, 15:30-17:00, and 17:30-19:00.
