INTRODUCING THE NEW WAVES

Under this year’s theme of My Style of Healthy Hub, the recent VC Young Designer Contest 2018 continually introduces up-and-coming designers to Thailand’s design scene.

VC Young Designer Contest 2018, held by VC Fabric, has recently ended. The contest gave chances to design students to participate in finding new design perspectives for materials like “curtains.” The contest’s 8th edition was held under the theme of My Style of Healthy Hub, which revolved around designing space for well being and health. General speaking, this healthy trend is somewhat ubiquitous nowadays (as seen by the greater number of people exercising), but what made this contest interesting is how it made the contestants integrate or apply curtains into the designs and combine the often semi-public space for health with the said material that serves mainly privacy purposes.

The workshop was held on the 16th of August through the 7th of September. It revolved around providing the interior design students from 10 universities with the background knowledge of using soft-furnishing materials in the work before giving them the opportunity to apply that knowledge into design work. 

จบลงไปแล้วสำหรับรายการประกวดแบบ VC Young Designer Contest 2018 จัดโดย VC Fabric ที่เปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษาด้านการออกแบบได้เข้ามาร่วมคิด หามุมมองใหม่ๆ ในการออกแบบจากวัสดุ “ผ้าม่าน” กัน VC Young Designer Contest ครั้งที่ 8 นี้มาในหัวข้อ My Style of Healthy Hub หรือการออกแบบสภาพแวดล้อมที่ส่งเสริมสุขภาพ ซึ่งในมุมมองหนึ่งอาจจะดูเป็นเทรนด์ที่เห็นได้ทั่วไปในปัจจุบัน (เพราะเดี๋ยวนี้ใครๆ ก็หันมาออกกำลังกายกัน) แต่เมื่อหัวข้อที่เกี่ยวกับพื้นที่เพื่อสุขภาพที่มักจะเปิดเป็นพื้นที่กึ่งสาธารณะ มารวมเข้ากับโจทย์ด้านวัสดุอย่าง “ผ้าม่าน” ที่ฟังก์ชั่นหลักๆ ของมันคือการสร้างความเป็นส่วนตัว โจทย์ที่ว่านี้จึงดูน่าสนใจขึ้นมากทีเดียวว่าบรรดานักศึกษาที่เข้าร่วมรายการนี้จะนำเสนอ / ประยุกต์การใช้ผ้าม่านเข้ากับงานออกแบบได้อย่างไรและในวิธีไหน

กิจกรรมเวิร์คช็อปจัดขึ้นในวันที่ 16 สิงหาคม – 7 กันยายนที่ผ่านมา โดยเป็นกิจกรรมปูความรู้เรื่องการเลือกใช้ Soft-Furnishing ในงานออกแบบภายในแก่นิสิตนักศึกษาสาขาออกแบบตกแต่งภายใน จำนวน 10 มหาวิทยาลัยก่อนจะเปิดโอกาสให้นักศึกษาต่อยอดความรู้จากกิจกรรมเวิร์คช็อปออกมาเป็นงานสร้างสรรค์ต่อไป

The utilization of the curtain in the design opens a door to new possibilities of designing. This is indeed the case for the 1st prize winner, CHONG LOM by Chulalongkorn University’s Krittawat Thararak. The work’s concept is that of using different types of fabric in partitioning spaces in order to give public spaces a greater sense of privacy. It also gives out a relaxing sense, which serves as a natural medicine method, in terms of both visuals and feeling. The visual sense comes from perspective framing, and the feeling by using moving curtains to give out the feeling of flowing winds. 

การเริ่มตั้งโจทย์การออกแบบจากวัสดุเป็นเหมือนประตูอีกบานที่นำไปสู่ความเป็นไปได้ใหม่ๆ ในการออกแบบ ดังที่เห็นได้จากผลงานการออกแบบที่ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศโดย กฤตวัฒน์ ธารารักษ์ จากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ช่องลม (CHONG LOM) ที่มีคอนเซ็ปต์คือการนำผ้าชนิดต่างๆ มา ใช้เป็น partition แบ่งพื้นที่ให้เกิดความรู้สึกเป็นส่วนตัวขึ้นในพื้นที่สาธารณะ โดยมองว่าความรู้สึกผ่อนคลายทั้งในระดับการมองเห็นนั่นคือการตีกรอบมุมมอง และในแง่ความรู้สึกถึงสายลมจากการพลิ้วไหวของผ้าม่านคือการดูแลรักษาตัวเองด้วยวิธีธรรมชาติบำบัด

The 2nd prize winner is Mon Son Pha by Athispat Sutthikornkamol from Chulalongkorn University. The work reinterprets Thai traditional games of  Mon Son Pha  and applies it to designing a new kind of exercising space by using curtains in order to partition different spaces into an indoor running track and thereby creating more tracks in the same space. It also seamlessly includes both passive and active activities into the same space. Another work that uses curtains for space partitioning is NANA by Napassorn Soontornnont from Chulalongkorn University. The work’s title is named for its design of a multi-activity health facility, in which each room’s space, same as the scenery of rice paddies, is partitioned by different floor levels. The interior is also decorated with fabrics of different colors to create different feelings and atmospheres. NANA, same as DIVE IN, won the 3rd prize.

ผลงานที่ได้รับรางวัลรองชนะเลิศคือ มอญซ่อนผ้า (MON SON PHA) โดย อธิษฐ์พัฒน์ สุทธิกรกมล จากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ที่นำเอาการละเล่นพื้นบ้านของไทยอย่างมอญซ่อนผ้า มาตีความใหม่เป็นพื้นที่ออกกำลังกายที่ให้ความรู้สึกต่างออกไปนั่นคือ การนำผ้ามาขึงเป็น partition แบ่งสเปซลู่วิ่งในร่มให้เกิดเป็นเส้นทางวิ่งหลากหลายเส้นทางที่ซ้อนกันอยู่ในพื้นที่เดียว ตลอดจนสอดแทรกกิจกรรมแบบ active และ passive ให้อยู่ในพื้นที่เดียวได้อย่างกลมกลืน การใช้ผ้ามาขึงเป็น partition ยังเห็นได้ในผลงานออกแบบของ นภัสสร สุนทรนนท์ จากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยกับผลงาน นานา (NANA) ที่ชื่อผลงานพ้องไปกับงานออกแบบศูนย์สุขภาพที่มีความหลากหลายของกิจกรรม มีการแบ่งพื้นที่ด้วยระดับชั้นของห้องในลักษณะเดียวกันกับภูมิทัศน์ของผืนนาร่วมกับการใช้พื้นผิวและสีสันของผ้าในงานตกแต่งภายในเพื่อสร้างอารมณ์และบรรยากาศบางอย่าง นานา (NANA) ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศอันดับที่สอง

DIVE IN by  Theerapong  Somsuksawadkul  from Chulalongkorn University uses the transparent quality of fabrics with different light shades and forms as the work’s main component. The different shades of colors are the core elements that were utilized to imply the transition area between the land and the sea. The runner-up prize was awarded to THE NATURE by  Affal  Heemman  from ABAC and ZIG NATURE by  Sirin  Prakalpawong from Chulalongkorn University.

DIVE IN เป็นอีกผลงานหนึ่งที่ได้รับรางวัลชนะเลิศอันดับสอง ธีรพงศ์ สมสุขสวัสดิ์กุล จากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย นำคุณสมบัติโปร่งแสงของผ้าชนิดต่างๆ ที่มีเฉดสีและฟอร์มของแสงแตกต่างกันออกมาใช้เป็นองค์ประกอบหลักใน DIVE IN โดยใช้เฉดสีเป็นเครื่องมือหลักในการทำให้ลำดับการเข้าถึงสเปซคล้ายคลึงกับลำดับการเข้าถึงทะเล และสุดท้ายรางวัลชมเชย คือผลงาน THE NATURE โดย นายอัฟฟาล หีมหมัน จากมหาวิทยาลัยอัชสัมชัญ และ ZIG NATURE โดยศิริณ ประคัลภวงส์ จากจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย

The last round of judgement ended without obstacle on the 17th of November. The honor was carried out by four committees, who not only decided upon the award but also gave advice regarding the contest to the contestants. They were The Abacus Design’s  Supawadee Lightbody, Room magazine’s managing editor,  Damrong Leewairoj, Create Great Design’s  Sopit Sucharitkul, and KMITL’s Faculty of Architecture’s professor,  Naruedee Phurattanarak. One of the committee members,  Damrong Leewairoj,  commented that Thai society is becoming aware of health issues, as they are worsening as compared to the past. He also noted that he saw interesting applications of ideas regarding health in the designs. 

What makes design contests interesting is that they are different from the general design assignments in universities. They are places where the students can showcase their ideas as well as engage in a chance to experiment with design work in an environment full of students from other universities who share different perspectives, ideas, and design processes. Apart from making a good portfolio, the reward of a total sum of more than 150,000 baht given out by VC Fabric also made the contestants realize the value of their future profession. These monetary rewards can be used as funds for future studies.

การตัดสินรอบสุดท้ายผ่านไปด้วยดีเมื่อวันเเสาร์ที่ 17 พฤศจิกายน ที่ผ่านมาโดยได้รับเกียรติจากคณะกรรมการทั้ง 4 ท่านได้แก่ สุภาวดี ไลท์บอดี้ จากบริษัท เอ็บบาคัส ดีไซน์, ดำรง ลี้ไวโรจน์ บรรณาธิการบริหารนิตยสาร Room, โสภิต สุจริตกุล จากบริษัทครีเอทเกรท ดีไซน์ และนฤดี ภู่รัตนรักษ์ อาจารย์จากคณะสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์ สถาบันเทคโนโลยีพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าคุณทหารลาดกระบัง ที่มาร่วมตัดสินและให้คำแนะนำแก่ผู้เข้าร่วมแข่งขันทุกๆ คน สำหรับโจทย์ในปีนี้ หนึ่งในคณะกรรมการอย่าง ดำรง ลี้ไวโรจน์ ให้ความเห็นว่าตอนนี้สังคมเรากำลังตื่นตัวกับปัญหาสุขภาพ เพราะปัญหาที่ว่านี้กำลังทวีความรุนแรงมากกว่าในยุคที่ผ่านมา และจากผลงานหลายๆ ชิ้น เขาได้เห็นการคลี่คลายแนวคิดออกมาเป็นงานออกแบบที่น่าสนใจ

ความน่าสนใจของการประกวดแบบคือ มันเป็นโจทย์การทำงานออกแบบที่ต่างจากการทำงานออกแบบส่งอาจารย์ในมหาวิทยาลัย โดยเป็นเหมือนสนามประลองความคิด และโอกาสให้นักศึกษาได้ทดลองทำงานออกแบบในสนามการแข่งขันจริงที่มีผู้ร่วมแข่งขันเป็นนักศึกษาจากสถาบันอื่นที่มีมุมมอง วิธีคิด และวิธีการออกแบบต่างออกไปจากที่เราคุ้นชิน นอกจากมันจะเป็นพอร์ทชั้นดีในการสมัครงาน รางวัลทุนการศึกษามูลค่ารวมกว่า 150,000 บาท ที่มอบให้โดย VC Fabric ยังจะเป็นกำลังใจให้ผู้เข้าร่วมตระหนักถึงศักยภาพของวิชาชีพนักออกแบบ รวมไปถึงยังเป็นทุนที่สามารถนำไปต่อยอดด้านการศึกษาต่อไปในอนาคตได้อีกด้วย
