AS THEIR STUDIO’S NAME SUGGEST, WHAT IMAGINARY OBJECTS (IO), THE ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO LED BY YARINDA BUNNAG AND ROBERTO REQUEJO BELETTE, EMPHASIZES IS THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE IMAGINARY AND PRAGMATIC ASPECT OF ARCHITECTURE

คงไม่ถูกต้องถ้าจะเรียก Imaginary Objects ว่าเป็นน้องใหม่ของวงการสถาปัตยกรรม เพราะทั้งสองผู้ก่อตั้ง ญารินดา บุนนาค และ Roberto Requejo Belette มีประสบการณ์ทำงานด้านสถาปัตยกรรมมาอย่างยาวนาน เราคุ้นเคยกับญารินดาในฐานะทีม Hypothesis อยู่แล้ว แต่คงยังไม่รู้กันว่า Roberto Requejo เป็นหนึ่งในทีม OMA Hong Kong ที่รับผิดชอบโครงการ Taipei Performing Arts Center และเป็นหัวหน้าทีมออกแบบ master plan ของ Prince Bay ในเชินเจิ้น ประเทศจีน ที่ชนะการประกวดแบบในปี 2014 ปัจจุบัน Roberto เป็นอาจารย์อยู่ที่คณะสถาปัตยกรรม University of Hong Kong “เราตั้งใจจะทำงานด้วยกันมาสักพักแล้ว ตอนนี้เป็นจังหวะที่ดีทั้งในแง่ประสบการณ์การทำงาน และเทคโนโลยีที่เอื้อให้เราทำงานร่วมกันได้แม้จะอยู่คนละที่กัน”
ปัจจุบัน Imaginary Objects มีโปรเจ็คต์ในมืออยู่ 5 โปรเจ็คต์ใหญ่ๆ และที่น่าสนใจที่สุดก็คงจะเป็น DIB Bangkok พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะร่วมสมัย ซึ่งน่าจะเป็นข่าวดีสำหรับคนในวงการศิลปะไทยในเร็วๆ นี้ แน่นอนว่าทั้งหมดนั้นยังเป็นภาพร่าง แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้เราเริ่มมองเห็นวิธีการทำงานของ Imaginary Objects นั้นคือ แนวคิดและการตั้งคำถามว่า “ทำไมเราต้องทำภาพ rendering ออกมาให้เหมือนจริงขนาดนั้น” ในเมื่อทุกอย่างที่เราทำพรีเซนต์ลูกค้านั้นคือ representation ของอาคาร ทำไมเราไม่ให้คุณค่ามันในฐานะภาพจินตนาการ (Imaginary) เพื่อสื่อสารไอเดีย เล่าเรื่องที่อยากจะเล่า
ที่กล่าวมานี้เป็นเหตุผลว่าทำไมพวกเขาถึงไม่พยายามทำภาพ rendering แบบ realistic แต่ทำมันออกมาในฐานะภาพแทน อาคารที่กึ่งๆ เป็นงานศิลปะที่เปิดพื้นที่ให้กับความเป็นไปได้อื่นๆ ต้องรอดูกันว่าเมื่อโปรเจ็คต์ในมือตอนนี้สร้างเสร็จจะเป็นอย่างไร แต่ที่แน่ๆ พวกเขาบอกกับ art4d มาแล้วว่า พวกเขาไม่เชื่อการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมที่พยายามทำให้ทุกๆ องค์ประกอบแสดงตัวออกมาภายใต้ภาษาการออกแบบภาษาเดียว
It wouldn’t be entirely correct to call Imaginary Objects rookies in the architectural scene, simply because the two founders, Yarinda Bunnag and Roberto Requejo Belette, are both architects with extensive and impressive track records. We are familiar with Yarinda as a member of Hypothesis but not many people know that Roberto Requejo was on the OMA Hong Kong team working on projects such as the Taipei Performing Arts Center. He was also the head of the design team responsible for the design of the Princebay master plan in Shenzhen, China that won the 2014 competition. Roberto is currently holding the position of a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong. “We’ve been wanting to work with each other for quite a while now and this is the right time for us to finally collaborate with our experiences and technology, which enables us to work together despite the long distance.”
Imaginary Objects is currently overseeing five major projects including the highly anticipated DIB Bangkok, the new contemporary art museum that is considered to be the latest good news for Thailand’s art community. While everything is now still in drawings, we’re beginning to see how their working process has evolved from the concept and question of why we have to create rendered images that visualize the reality so profoundly. For Imaginary Object, what’s presented to a client is the representation of a building, so why not value it as an imaginary image that helps to communicate ideas and tell the stories they want to tell.
Such an approach explains why they never attempt to create realistic renderings but rather a representation of a building that looks somewhat like a work of art with the kind of openness that embraces other possibilities. It remains to be seen how the completed works will turn out but from our conversation with the two founders, Imaginary Objects doesn’t seem to believe in the type of architectural designs that express every element using merely one design language.
