Dyson Lightcycle™ is one of the products from Dyson’s second lighting product line after the brand’s recent release of the office lamp, Dyson Cu-Beam™ back in 2017. The technology that is predominant in the development of Dyson’s lighting product is the heat pipe technology, a vacuum-sealed copper tube draws heat away, to efficiently cool Dyson Lightcycle™’ LEDs, prolonging and protecting its light quality for 60 years.
art4d has a chance to talk briefly with Scott Maguire, Dyson’s VP Global Engineering & Operation, about the development trajectory of the brand’s smart home products. Our conversation with him provides a clear and broader look at Dyson’s current and future direction. “The principle of Smart Home technology is the ‘connectivity’ between users and the tools. So the important issue here is about finding and choosing the type of tools that have to connect to home dwellers.” From Dyson’s perspective, that particular products are the ones in the environmental control technologies from air purifiers (air quality control), lamps (lighting quality control), including the robot vacuum cleaners, all of which rely on (a certain level of) human’s command in order to operate.
Dyson Lightcycle™ connects with its user via the smartphone application, Dyson Link. By having each users filling in his or her age and timezone into the app, the algorithm use the input data to calculate and personalize the intensity of light and simulate the color temperature from the time when the sunrise until the sun sets in each geographic area (the engineer confirms that the data is rechecked with satellite measurement). In addition, through the application, a user is able to choose the preferred lighting mode to best suit his/her current activity such as reading/resting/working (that requires extra optical clarity) or waking up. The light will be calculated to correspond with each user’s activity. Not only that, the pre-set task modes in the app allows users to set schedules for the light to come on when they’re away from home to deter burglars.
As humans grow familiar with spending a majority of time in their daily life under the exposure of artificial light, not that many people are aware of its disruptive effects on human body clock and enforcing the system. One of the distinctive features of Dyson Lightcycle™ is its brightness, which ranges from 100-1,000 lux, the ability to offer glare protection and low optical flicker. The design, which reminisces laboratory lamp, is actually derived from an engineering drawing table with scissor legs that can move freely and precisely. “At Dyson, forms follow function. While consumers love Dyson’s products for their looks, our primary object isn’t about creating beautiful-looking objects but developing technologies that can become helpful alternatives for people to have a better quality of life.”
Dyson Lightcycle™ is only one of the three products the brand launched earlier in May of 2019 in Singapore.
