A SPECIAL INTERACTIVE ART PROJECT FOR ART STAGE JAKARTA BY UP-AND-COMING INDONESIAN COLLECTIVE DOUBLE DEER, A GROUP COMPRISED OF INDONESIAN ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS WHO WORK AT THE INTERSECTION OF ART, MUSIC AND SCIENCE
Our internal model of time, movement, mass and space is based on a lifetime of experience that are perhaps even genetically encoded. What happens when we build a representative of such? What happens when we bend the rules? The installation ‘Transform’ by Double Deer changes the public’s relationship with time through exploration around the notions of space, light and sound, and the relationships between them.
“Over time, our senses have evolved to tune into the stimuli necessary for survival. How do these actions of survival affect our cultural or creative output? The human body can be considered an instrument, our movements creating vibrations both within and beyond the limits of our senses. As we navigate through our environment, we tune in to these stimuli. Constantly adapting – creating an evolving feedback loop between ourselves and surrounding space. The installation ‘Undisplay’ uses principles from sampling and acoustics, demonstrating the polarity of the elements chaos and order, movement and stagnancy. In this context, the idea can be perceived either as a scientific means of analysis or a resource of meditation, reflecting on natural phenomenon on an almost philosophical scope. In general, Undisplay considers the way we sense our surrounding world, and how our actions react back on us. This is their practice of semiotics – how meaning, with the aid of signs, is produced, conveyed, received and interpreted, both non-linguistically in our bodies and as a scanning of information processes in the world around us.” – Double Deer
