It has been 12 years that Perspective magazine has supported the society of architecture, interior design and product design across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond via the A&D Trophy Awards,
held annually to celebrate the excellent creativity and successful ideas emerging throughout the Asian region and worldwide. For 2017, winners of the Best of the Best Trophies were awarded under five categories.
The first trophy for Professional Architecture, along with the Best Institutional Public Space, went to Neri&Hu Design and Research Office for Suzhou Chapel in China. The design of the building takes its cues from vernacular architecture of the Jiangnan region of China, as it takes shape in the form of grey brick walls and a floating white volume above. The white box is composed of an inner layer with punctured openings and an outer layer of perforated metal that reflects the sun in the daytime and provides a soft glow in the night.

The second trophy was awarded to Asylum Creative for the Warehouse Hotel, Singapore in the professional interior design category. The design reflects Singapore’s forgotten history from the stylish and enigmatic space reminiscent of the building’s original incarnation to the interior space designed to complement the existing structures, while still being different from each other. The fresh perspective on the term ‘industrial’ is seamlessly married with the modern-day decoration.

The third trophy for the best in commercial, retail or office design was awarded to Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates for Ping An Finance Centre in Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen’s tallest building acts as the physical and iconic center of the central business district. The tower’s four principle façades are sheathed in chevron-shaped stone verticals that extend from the building’s base clad in glass and stone.

Another best of award for the commercial category for interior design was granted to Guangzhou China Resources Group Tianhe Sales Centre designed by Shen Zhen Matrix Interior Design. The design plan for the interior space turns focus to inclusion within the space layout. The expression of Oriental influences in the design concept can be read through the drawn lines that express notion of ‘the mountains looking like ocean waves, layer upon layer,’ articulating both static and dynamic elements.

Last but not least, the best of in the professional interior design for an institutional/public space via architecture went to ArtisTree in Hong Kong. Founder and principal Frank Leung states, “While multipurpose performance spaces are often nicknamed ‘black box’ theatres, we were more interested in the concept of an ‘open box,’ one that resonates with people who work and live around Taikoo Place.”
