The artist whose performance art videos show herself being represented by a broom, scale, clothes rack, ice shaver, etc. With the physicality of a female body, it’s unavoidable that her works have been used for feminist purposes but if we were to rule out the gender issue, what Vatanajyankur discusses in her work is essentially the human condition where people are forced by the society to work in exchange for their social statuses.
art4d: What is your opinion on the labeling of artists and designers according to their gender, do you think such categorization will become a problem and is it a point of view that follows the conventional notion of binary opposition?
Kawita Vatanajyankur: Regardless of the fact that I’ma woman, when I’m working on a certain series, I don’t want to limit the content of my work to be just about feminism or gender equality. Viewers still have that impression of me. For the Splashed series, where I talk about labor in the fishing industry, I use myself as a tool or a victim and the viewers still try to find a connection between this issue and feminism while I am primarily discussing issues like the abuse of illegal labor, consumerism, capitalism and authoritarianism.
art4d: What are you feelings or opinions regarding comments that say your work is very feminine?
KV: As a female artist, my work is representative of, and interpreted as, being about women’s rights, equality and women’s labor. It’s no surprise if someone comments that my work is very feminine because it really is. But I want for them to look at the other details as well, for example labor issues, the working system and the fact that when labor and working for money take over it is as if we are just ants or a machine. Meanwhile, technology is replacing humans. Another issue is capitalism, the demand for consumption is increasing and has an effect on labor classes while the worst issue is human trafficking.
art4d: Do you think freedom of expression affects one’s creative ability?
KV: I believe everyone has the freedom to think, to do, to contradict and question the society. This is the duty of artists, to work toward creating motivation to change something in the society. But our notion is not always right, it represents a choice and other ideas that are different from the social norms. We live in a society where, due to culture and beliefs, people don’t dare to think differently because of fear. In society we have to put a mask on our face and carve our names on our foreheads, so we fear that the society will determine us and there is also the fear of not being accepted, being useless. These are what humans fear the most, so it is not easy to express what we think and what we feel 100%. But with art, I can fully create it and I can say what I want because my artwork conveys these things through visual images so it’s not necessary to communicate with a direct message. Art can relate to and give the audience time to interpret. The freedom of communication is the charm of art.
art4d: Who has been the most influential figure for you regarding the way you work?
KV: I started working in art when I started learning about the Buddhist religion. Previously, I had many questions about religion but when I understood Buddha’s teachings clearly, I understood the idea of not taking things too seriously, excluding feelings through the law of karma. This made me think that we don’t have to possess anything because we can’t possess everything and all is endless. When I worship, I never wish for materials like money. The strange thing is, I think many people misunderstand the heart of the Buddhist religion. After working in art for a while I can see the human value, like that women shouldn’t look at themselves like a product or material which has to be beautiful and fulfill some fake definition created by society before being accepted. The age of materialism has made humans alway try to reach for happiness and success as determined by the society. This turns humans into victims of the industrial age and creates an impact on the lower class that they don’t recognize. I am studying meditation seriously through the process of my artworks; this helps me to learn to strengthen from the inside, and understand that when I ignore emotional pain by not being too serious about who I am or what I’m doing now, I’ll be able to confront a situation better.

art4d: คิดอย่างไรกับ label ศิลปิน หญิง/ศิลปินชาย หรือดีไซเนอร์หญิง/ ดีไซเนอร์ชาย คิดว่าการแบ่งแยกแบบนี้เป็นปัญหา และยังเป็นการมองที่ยังติดอยู่กับวิธีคิดแบบคู่ตรงข้ามแบบเดิมๆ หรือไม่
กวิตา วัฒนะชยังกูร: ด้วยความที่เป็นผู้หญิง เวลาทำงานศิลปะในบาง series ที่เราไม่อยากจำกัดให้เนื้อหามีแต่เรื่องของสิทธิสตรี หรือเรื่องของการเรียกร้องเพื่อความเท่าเทียมทางเพศ คนดูอาจจะยังติดภาพเหล่านั้นจากเราอยู่ อย่างใน Splashed ชุดผลงานที่เรา พูดถึงแรงงานประมง แต่เราใช้ตัวเองเป็นอุปกรณ์ หรือเป็นเหยื่อคนดูก็อาจจะยังติดภาพว่าเรื่องนี้มันเกี่ยวกับผู้หญิงซึ่งจริงๆ เราพูดถึงเรื่องแรงงานประมงเรื่องของการบริโภคนิยม ระบบ ทุนนิยมและอำนาจนิยมเป็นหลักมากกว่า
art4d: รู้สึก และมีความคิดเห็นอย่างไร เมื่อผลงานของตัวเองโดนคอมเมนต์ว่า “งานดูเป็นผู้หญิงจัง”
กวิตา วัฒนะชยังกูร: ในฐานะที่เป็นศิลปินผู้หญิง และงานก็มักจะถูกนำเสนอและตีความเกี่ยวกับสิทธิสตรี ความเท่าเทียม และแรงงานผู้หญิง จึงไม่แปลกใจถ้าชิ้นงานจะถูกมองว่าเป็นงานของผู้หญิง เพราะมันก็เป็นแบบนั้นจริงๆ แต่เราก็อยากให้มองไปถึงรายละเอียดอีกอย่าง อย่างประเด็นเรื่องแรงงาน ระบบการทำงานเพื่อแลกกับเงินเหมือนกับเราเป็นมดงานหรือเป็นเครื่องจักร แต่ในขณะเดียวกันเครื่องจักรก็กำลังมาแทนที่แรงงานของมนุษย์ในอีกไม่นาน หรืออีกประเด็น อย่างเรื่องระบบทุนนิยมในปัจจุบัน ที่ความต้องการในการบริโภคที่มากขึ้นส่งผลกระทบกับชนชั้นแรงงาน หรือเลวร้ายที่สุดคือเรื่องของการค้ามนุษย์เป็นต้น
art4d: เสรีภาพในการแสดงความคิดเห็น ส่งผลต่อขีดความสามารถในการ “คิดสร้างสรรค์” จริงหรือไม่ ในความคิดของคุณ
กวิตา วัฒนะชยังกูร: เราเชื่อว่าทุกๆคนมีเสรีภาพในการคิด การทำ การเห็นแย้ง และการตั้งคำถามกับสิ่งที่เป็นอยู่ในสังคม นี่คือหน้าที่หลักของศิลปิน มันคือการทำงานเพื่อให้เกิดแรงขับเคลื่อนในการเปลี่ยนแปลงบางสิ่งในสังคม ไม่ใช่ว่าความคิดของเราถูกไปเสียหมด แต่มันคือการนำเสนอทางเลือกและแนวความคิดอื่นๆ ที่ต่างออกไปจากสิ่งที่สังคมกำหนดมาให้ เราอยู่ในสังคมที่มีวัฒนธรรมและความเชื่อที่ทำให้คนไม่กล้าที่จะคิดต่างเพราะกลัวผิด สังคมที่เราใส่หน้ากากรูปตัวเองแถมสลักชื่อให้บนหน้าผากเสียด้วย เราจึงกลัวว่าคนจะตราหน้าเราว่าเป็นแบบนั้นแบบนี้ และกลัวการไม่ถูกยอมรับหรือไม่เห็นค่า ไม่เห็นตัวตน ซึ่งมนุษย์หวาดกลัวกับความรู้สึกนั้นเป็นที่สุด มันจึงไม่ใช่เรื่องง่ายที่ทุกๆ คนจะสามารถแสดงออกถึงความคิด ความรู้สึกของตนเองได้ 100% แต่การทำงานศิลปะนั้น เราสามารถทำงานให้สร้างสรรค์ได้เต็มที่ และพูดในสิ่งที่อยากพูด เพราะศิลปะของเรามันเป็นการเล่าเรื่องด้วยภาพ ซึ่งมันไม่ต้องตรงไปตรงมา มันมีชั้นเชิงในการเล่าเรื่องและให้พื้นที่กับผู้ชมในการตีความ ซึ่งเสรีภาพในการเล่าเรื่องมันคือเสน่ห์ของการทำงานศิลปะ
art4d: ใครที่มีอิทธิพลต่อการทำงานของคุณที่สุด
กวิตา วัฒนะชยังกูร: เราเริ่มทำงานศิลปะตอนที่เริ่มศึกษาธรรมะจริงจัง ก่อนหน้านี้เราเคยตั้งคำถามกับศาสนามากมาย แต่เมื่อเราได้เข้าใจถึงแก่นแท้ของคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า เราจึงเข้าใจในเรื่องของการปล่อยวาง และการละเว้นความรู้สึกต่างๆ การตั้งอยู่และดับไปของทุกๆ สรรพสิ่ง สิ่งนี้ทำให้เราคิดได้ว่าทุกวันนี้เราไม่จำเป็นจะต้องอยากได้ อยากมี หรือครอบครองสิ่งใดเลย เพราะเราไม่สามารถครอบครองสิ่งใดได้ และไม่มีสิ่งใดจีรัง เวลาเราไหว้พระเราจึงไม่เคยขอสิ่งที่เรารู้สึกว่ามันเป็นของนอกกาย เช่น เงินทอง สิ่งของต่างๆ ซึ่งสิ่งที่น่าแปลกก็คือ เรารู้สึกว่าคนส่วนใหญ่เข้าใจหัวใจหลักของปรัชญาของพระพุทธเจ้าผิด พอทำงานศิลปะมาเรื่อยๆ เราจึงมักจะพูดถึงการให้คุณค่าของคน การที่ผู้หญิงเราไม่ควรที่จะมองตัวเองเป็น product หรือวัตถุหนึ่งที่จะต้องไขว่คว้าหาความสวยในนิยามปลอมๆ ของสังคม เพื่อให้คนอื่นๆ ยอมรับ เรื่องของยุค Materialism ที่ทำให้มนุษย์วิ่งตามหาความสุข ความสำเร็จในนิยามของสังคมอย่างไม่มีวันจบสิ้น สิ่งเหล่านี้ทำให้มนุษย์ตกเป็นเหยื่อของยุคอุตสาหกรรม และสร้างผลกระทบให้กับคนชนชั้นล่างโดยที่พวกเขาเหล่านั้นไม่รู้ตัว เราศึกษาการทำสมาธิอย่างจริงจังผ่านกระบวนการสร้างงานศิลปะของเราหลายๆ ชิ้น มันทำให้เราได้รู้จักความแข็งแกร่งที่มาจากภายใน ทำให้เราได้รู้ว่าเมื่อเวลาที่เราตัด emotional pain ออกไปด้วยการปล่อยวางจากการ “เป็นตัวเรา” และอยู่กับสิ่งที่กระทำ ณ ปัจจุบัน เราจะสามารถเผชิญกับสถานการณ์ต่างๆ ได้ดีมากขึ้นจริงๆ
