‘Exhibiting Architecture: A Paradox?’ is a book that puts together articles from the seminar of the same name held by Yale School of Architecture back in 2013. The topic of the seminar was derived from the questions raised by architectural academics concerning the examination of possibilities for the display or exhibition of objects of spectacular and complicated scale such as buildings and cities. The concept was based on the belief that the exhibition serves as a representation in which the actual physical conditions of a city are conveyed. Vice versa, another important question is how architects can communicate the abstractness of architectural experiences through the space and time of the exhibition, and define and bring forward new disciplines that have been conceptualized to connect the theories in the architectural world to the social and cultural context. A part of the title ‘A Paradox?’ implicates the paradoxical characteristics of both fundamental concepts often visible in past architectural exhibitions.
Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Carson Chan and David Andrew Tasman, the co-creators and co-editors of the book invite the academics to explore ideas through exhibitions and historically important incidents. The articles are presented in five main categories: Exhibition as Medium, Immersive Environments, Public Encounters, Curatorial Acts and Dialogues. The latter is basically the documentation of the seminar’s discussion panel where participants (writers, critics, curators, etc.) share their opinions and insights on the concepts and points of view behind the emergence of exhibitions of contemporary architecture today.
