AHEC in conversation with Simeon Dux, a Melbourne-based designer and maker whose enduring relationship with timber. From his early years as a carpenter to his evolution into a furniture designer, Dux has developed a deep sensitivity to the character and diversity of different wood species, shaping ‘heirloom quality’ pieces designed for multi-generational purpose.

“I was continually exposed to exceptional quality design and over time it seeped in, I learnt what small details really make a piece stand out versus what characterises a poor imitation”. This enduring relationship with timber furniture is evident throughout Simeon Dux’s professional journey. Most recently, he received The Object 2025 at the INDE. Awards, with handcraft forming the fundamental foundation of his practice.

Dux spent more than a decade working as a carpenter, an experience that shaped his appreciation for timber and revealed the material’s broader creative potential. This led him to pursue further studies in furniture design under Alastair Boell at the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking, where he refined his design skills. His design philosophy centers on the careful selection of appropriate timber, master-level handcraftsmanship, and the exquisite and delicate design.

As both designer and maker, Dux places particular importance on choosing the most absolute right timber for each piece. He considers the species-based subtleties and nuances, examining grain structure, density, and porosity to ensure the material fully supports the intended design. This approach is clearly expressed in the ‘Art Deco Wall Unit,’ crafted from American White Oak and Walnut, featuring hand-formed curved parquetry inlays on the sliding panels.

Among all species, American Walnut remains Dux’s favorite. It was one of the first timbers he worked with, admired for its naturally rich color and versatility in shaping refined forms. He also favors American Maple and Cherry, valued for their accessibility, quality, and ability to deliver long-term value. From the earliest sketches to the final execution, Dux designs with longevity in mind, creating “a piece of furniture that can last as long as it takes for another tree to grow, where I know I’ve done the timber justice.”

Dux operates his own workshop in Melbourne, where intelligent design meets meticulous detailing through the use of solid hardwoods. His practice remains focused on furniture designed for longevity, with the potential for a future solo exhibition that honours the qualities of exceptional timber.
