With this house in the valley of Chiang Rai, Pornchai Boonsom has finally made his architectural design built.
How the way of living change and how will the architecture of the house respond to this change, you can refer to the present situation or make a trajectory to the coming future.
Pornchai: Society has changed very much with the advent of electronic and information technologies such as TV or digital media – as in front of Siam Center which makes us sensually involved with the event.
Architecture responds and thus is affected by conditions prevalent in society, economics, and culture.
House is meant to be a secure, calm and a warm place which consists of 1. structure 2. functions
Today our way of living plays an effective role on the environment and others around us. The house is necessary to contain the changes in living conditions and those related to culture, tradition and beliefs. The response of architecture to changing lifestyles indicates that the house (architecture) is essentially packaging – packaging for our lives like clothes are packaging for our bodies.
Space and architecture
1. In obvious space boundaries such as row buildings which have “specific” boundaries, such as those in Japan, we notice the connection between public space and internal space on several levels – the underground, the ground and above the ground. The vertical flow is connected to the front and shows a clear relationship.
2. Element according to criminal experiences the cage becomes part of architectural element.
3. To identify space and the function of space, in the past, could change function but in the present it is identification which enhances the role of changes.
Air Condition/nature
The Architecture of the past is governed by strong principles which define one-to-one relationships such as those between meaning and function, meaning and structure, meaning and form. Consequently, the architecture is separated by the content of the sign and its meaning. Post structuralism confirms that both sign and its meaning are always together for certain expressions.
Architecture, somehow, replaces these expressions by Sign=Signifier.
Is there any famous house or houses that inspire you? Could you name the house you think may be the most influential house in the 20th century.
Pornchai: “Guardiola House”, the architecture that was designed by Peter Eisenman involving “Chora in the timeaus”. It reflects the relationship between thought and irrational but unidentified signals. Guardiola House is the first architecture related to traces and imprints. “Space of Chora” is the space in between the traces and the space generated by imprints. Recently we’ve entered the age of Chora and Weak Form (Weak Form Urbanism). Mu defines some aspects of imprinted remembrance. The imprinting is a general condition of space relating to traditional space.
Technology has overwhelmed nature – the automobile and the airplane, which with their potential for unlimited accessibility, have made the rational grids and radical pattern of the 19th century obsolete. And modern thought has found “unreasonable-ness” within traditional reason, and the logical has become the illogical.
The house breaks the notion of figure/frame because it is figure and frame simultaneously. It’s tangential L-shapes penetrates three planes, always interweaving. The house shows the changes of shapes formed by imprints left in it and traces of material removed by the pattern. These traces are recorded in two linear frames of steel grids which mark another position of the structure, before the interweaving. The imprinted from is no longer either frame or objects.
