WATCH DOGS

“The project began with me seeing the news about stray dogs being abused including the one incident where a man tried to run over a dog with his car. I felt like I should do something about it and it just so happens that the agency I’m working for allows its staff to work on our own side projects. So I thought about coming up with a campaign that could help resolve the problem and then looked for someone who could actually support the project. I contacted Soi Dog Foundation because they have been working on the issue for a long time and they understand and acknowledge the significance of this problem like I do,” explained Pakornkrit Khantaprap, the creative mind behind the campaign that is a special collaboration between Cheil (Thailand) Limited and Soi Dog Foundation.

Stray dogs have become an issue that has been discussed worldwide over the past years, especially in Thailand where the Department of Livestock Development reports that there are over 100,000 dogs left homeless each year with the number continuing to grow. The even bigger problems are abuse and the dog meat trade despite the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act, B.E. 2557 (2014) and the maximum sentence of a two-year imprisonment and a 400,000 THB fine for such actions. For the creative team over at Cheil (Thailand), however, legal punishment alone is not a solution to the problem.

The initial idea was conceived from the thought of making use of the stray dogs’ instinct for the benefit of the community by proposing the possibility of making the four-legged creatures’ potential acknowledged by giving them a new role in the community. Watchdogs is the project that was born from an attempt to present and provide solutions through the incorporation of technological innovations and the developed campaign will be promoted through Soi Dog Foundation’s online platform.

Khantaprap proposed the idea of turning stray dogs into Watchdogs via a ‘smart vest’ that is equipped with a camera and sensor that detects the sounds of dog barks. When a dog barks, the sensor will trigger the camera and send a signal to notify community members via smartphones. The entire technology has Anat Jarakorn, freelance programmer and inventor, as its developer.

“The technologies that have been applied to the project are available on the market. The camera and sensor that detects the sounds of the barks are stuff found in a standard smartphone. As for the hardware, we use a Raspberry Pi to send out the 4G or Wi-Fi signal. We create a bot in the community’s Line group so once the dog with the smart vest barks, the sensor will operate the camera and start recording. Then the bot will send the data to the Line group in the form of a link, which allows the group’s members to have access to the data sent in from the video camera. Right now we’re at the beginning stage of the development and the signal covers only about 10-12 meters, so what needs to be developed in the future is how to find a way to read the meanings of the barks because we are not able to accurately translate the dogs’ feelings when they bark. We also intend to switch to a server system and develop an application instead of a Line group for users to be able to access the information,” explained Jarakorn.

With the project still in a fairly early stage, the ‘smart vest’ technology needs to be developed to function more effectively. But from the aspect of a viral campaign, it’s considered to be quite successful having gained quite impressive feedback and interest from the Internet world.

“โครงการนี้เริ่มต้นมาจากช่วงหนึ่งที่เราเห็นข่าวสุนัขจรจัดถูกทำร้าย หรือมีคนพยายามขับรถทับสุนัขจรจัด เราก็เลยรู้สึกว่าเราน่าจะทำอะไรบางอย่าง พอดีที่เอเจนซี่ของเราพนักงานสามารถทำโครงการพิเศษนอกเหนือไปจากงานประจำที่ทำอยู่ได้ พวกเราก็เลยพยายามคิดแคมเปญบางอย่างที่เกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ขึ้นมา จากนั้นก็มองหาว่าใครที่จะช่วยเรา support โครงการนี้ได้ ก็เลยลองติดต่อไปยัง Soi Dog Foundation ที่ทำงานช่วยเหลือหมาจรจัดแบบนี้มานานแล้ว ซึ่งน่าจะเข้าใจและเห็นความสำาคัญของปัญหานี้ร่วมกับเรา” ภากรกฤช ขันทปราบ ครีเอทีฟที่คิดแคมเปญนี้ เล่าให้ฟังถึงที่มาของการทำงานร่วมกันระหว่าง Cheil (Thailand) Limited และ Soi Dog Foundation

ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ดูเหมือนว่าปัญหาสุนัขจรจัดเริ่มกลายเป็นปัญหาที่มีการพูดถึงกันทั่วโลก โดยเฉพาะในประเทศไทย กรมปศุสัตว์ เคยรายงานว่าในแต่ละปีจะมีสุนัขที่ถูกทิ้งให้กลายเป็นสุนัขจรจัดกว่า 100,000 ตัว และตัวเลขที่ว่านี้ก็มีแนวโน้มที่จะเพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ปัญหาที่ใหญ่กว่านั้นก็คือยังมีการทารุณกรรม รวมถึงการค้าเนื้อสุนัข ดังนั้นจึงมีสุนัขจรจัดมากมายถูกจับเพื่อนำมาบริโภค ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีการออกพระราชบัญญัติป้องกันการทารุณกรรมสัตว์และการจัดสวัสดิภาพสัตว์ขึ้นมาในปี 2014 และมีการกำหนดโทษจำคุกไม่เกิน 2 ปี และปรับไม่เกิน 40,000 บาทเอาไว้ แต่สำหรับทีมครีเอทีฟของ Cheil (Thailand) แล้วดูเหมือนว่าการกำาหนดโทษไว้อย่างเดียว ยังไม่น่าจะเป็นทางออกในการแก้ปัญหา

ไอเดียแรกเริ่มของภากรกฤชเกิดจากแนวคิดที่จะเปลี่ยนสัญชาตญาณของหมาจรจัดให้เป็นประโยชน์แก่ชุมชน โดยเสนอความเป็นไปได้ที่จะดึงความสามารถบางอย่างของสุนัขออกมาใช้งานเพื่อเปิดประเด็นให้คนในสังคมเห็นในศักยภาพที่ว่านี้ และเพื่อทดลองสร้างบทบาทใหม่ให้สุนัขจรจัด โครงการ Watchdogs จึงเกิดขึ้นมาด้วยการนำาเสนอการแก้ปัญหาผ่านนวัตกรรม โดยแคมเปญทั้งหมดที่ทีมงานช่วยกันคิดขึ้นมาจะถูกประชาสัมพันธ์ออกไปสู่สังคมผ่านทาง Soi Dog Foundation

ภากรกฤชเสนอไอเดียที่จะเปลี่ยนหมาจรจัดให้เป็น Watchdogs ด้วยการให้สุนัขจรจัดสวมใส่สิ่งที่เขาเรียกมันว่า ‘เสื้อกั๊กหมาอัจฉริยะ’ (smart vest) โดยภายในเสื้อกั๊กจะติดตั้งกล้องและตัวเซนเซอร์ที่จับสัญญาณเสียงเห่า เมื่อสุนัขเห่าตัวเซนเซอร์จะเปิดกล้องที่ติดตั้งอยู่แล้วส่งสัญญานเตือนไปยังมือถือของคนที่อยู่ในชุมชน โดยเทคโนโลยีทั้งหมดที่นำมาใช้พัฒนาขึ้นมาโดย อาณัฒน์ จะระคร โปรแกรมเมอร์และนักประดิษฐ์อิสระ อาณัฒน์บอกกับเราว่า “ตอนนี้เทคโนโลยีต่างๆ ที่นำมาปรับใช้ในโครงการเป็นเทคโนโลยีพื้นฐานทั่วไปที่สามารถซื้อหาได้ตามท้องตลาด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นกล้องและตัวเซนเซอร์ที่ใช้จับเสียงเห่า ก็เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่มีอยู่ในมือถือทั่วๆ ไป ตัวฮาร์ดแวร์ เราก็ใช้ Raspberry Pi ซึ่งสามารถหาซื้อได้ตามท้องตลาด เอาไว้คอยส่งสัญญาณ 4G หรือ Wi-Fi โดยเราจะสร้าง bot ไว้ในกลุ่ม Line ของชุมชน เมื่อสุนัขเห่า ตัวเซนเซอร์ก็จะทำการเปิดกล้องเพื่อทำาการบันทึกข้อมูล แล้ว bot ก็จะส่งข้อมูลเป็นลิงค์ไปโพสต์ไว้ในกลุ่ม ทำาให้คนที่อยู่ในกลุ่มสามารถเปิดดูข้อมูลที่ส่งจากกล้องวิดีโอได้ ตอนนี้กำลังอยู่ในช่วงเริ่มต้นของการพัฒนา สัญญาณก็ยังส่งได้ในระยะไม่ไกลนักประมาณ 10-12 เมตร สิ่งที่เราต้องพัฒนาต่อไปอีกในอนาคตคือ การอ่านเสียงเห่า เพราะตอนนี้เรายังไม่สามารถแยกเสียงเห่าของสุนัขได้ว่าตอนนี้มันเห่าด้วยความรู้สึกแบบไหน และเปลี่ยนไปใช้ระบบ server และทำา app ขึ้นมาแทนการใช้กลุ่ม Line แบบที่เป็นอยู่”

ตอนนี้โครงการ Watchdogs กำาลังอยู่ในช่วงเริ่มต้น ในอนาคตยังต้องมีการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีเพื่อให้เสื้อกั๊กหมาอัจฉริยะใช้งานได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น แต่ในเรื่องของการเป็น viral campaign ต้องถือได้ว่าประสบความสำเร็จพอสมควร เพราะเป็นโครงการที่คนให้ความสนใจอยู่ไม่น้อยในโลกโซเชียลมีเดีย
