KAIMEOW

With the publisher’s intention for such information to function somewhat as a caption that provides a rough understanding of the political situation and incident that inspired each of the illustrator’s jokes, and while Prachathai mentions in the introduction of the book that the information is provided with no intention of interfering with the artist’s works and readers’ interpretations, the text still feels excessive and more importantly, it destroys the idiosyncratic silence of Kaimeow.

Silence is the key element of this political cartoon. It grants viewers a chance to exercise their thoughts based on their own personal experience and knowledge. The silence created from the absence of text also protects the work from being monitored and censored by the state because, at the very least, there is no written statement explaining who and what a certain joke is mocking. What’s cool about Kaimeow, apart from its silent humor, is the stories that are chosen and turned into a series of four-panel cartoons. The brilliant design and use of characters and symbols communicate the issues that cannot be expressed in written form as the cute-looking characters are left to face one ironic and somewhat pathetic incident after another.

‘Kaimeow’ introduced itself to the public as a Facebook page two years after the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s 2014 coup d’état. According to the page’s administrator, the 4-panel silent comic was initially inspired by the work of Joan Cornellà before developing its own style of storytelling and eventually expanding the number of followers to almost three hundred thousand. In January of 2018, ‘Kaimeow’ mysteriously disappeared from Facebook before making a return as ‘Kaimeow X’ in the following month.

Characters from Star Wars, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Doraemon, Hanma Yujiro, Conan or even Kenshiro have been featured through cameos in Kaimeow’s works along with other symbols like pizza, coconut shells, dinosaurs, bamboo stems and so on. These symbolic elements make it even harder for people who do not have the background knowledge of the cartoons or films, including Thai political Internet memes, to understand the jokes. But at the same time, with the artist having never revealed or explained any of the jokes, the ambiguity and obscurity became the strong point of the comic whose demands for readers’ interpretations makes the work interesting and appealing in a way that no other political comic artist in Thailand has ever done before.

The fact that the book completely sold out at this year’s national book fair is not only a rare phenomenon in this time when the print media industry is struggling to survive, but also an indication that there is a group of people who are eager to own a publication that documents this particular period of history, especially the past two years where suppression and fear fill the air. There is courage on both the artist and Prachathai’s part for creating a book that will become another historical reference of having to live in this strange time, in a country where silence and humor are used as the cures to help us all get by.

ความเงียบคืออาวุธสำคัญของการ์ตูนล้อการเมือง-เสียดสีสังคมแบบไข่แมวอย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย มันเปิดโอกาสให้คนดูคิดอะไรก็ได้ตามแต่ข้อมูลและประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้ดู ความเงียบที่ไร้ตัวหนังสือยังถือเป็นเครื่องช่วยป้องกันตัวเองจากการมอนิเตอร์ของรัฐได้อยู่บ้าง อย่างน้อยที่สุดก็ไร้คำพูดโจ่งแจ้งว่ามุกนี้กำลังแซะผู้มีอำนาจรายไหนอยู่ ที่เจ๋งไม่แพ้ความเงียบเลยก็คือไหวพริบในการเลือกว่าจะเอาข่าวไหนมาเล่นและขยี้ให้ได้ภายใน 4 ช่องจบ รวมไปถึงสกิลการออกแบบและเลือกใช้คาแร็คเตอร์ต่างๆ วิธีการสร้างสัญลักษณ์แทนคำที่ไม่สามารถพูดออกมาได้ในแต่ละสถานการณ์ที่มาพร้อมความน่ารัก น่าสมเพช และตลกร้ายในคราวเดียวกัน

เพจไข่แมว เปิดตัวครั้งแรกในช่วงเกือบ 2 ปีหลัง คสช. ยึดอำนาจ การ์ตูนเงียบ 4 ช่องจบที่แอดมินเพจบอกว่าได้แรงบันดาลใจจากงานของ Joan Cornellà จนกลายมาเป็นการ์ตูนล้อการเมืองในสไตล์ของตัวเอง ไม่นานก็มีผู้ติดตามหลักแสน แล้ววันดีคืนดีเพจไข่แมวก็ปลิวหายไปอย่างฉับพลันในช่วงมกราคม 2561 ก่อนจะกลับมาอีกครั้งในชื่อ ‘ไข่แมว X’ ในช่วงกลางเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ที่ผ่านมา

ปรากฏการณ์หนังสือไข่แมวหมดเกลี้ยงทุกแผงในงานสัปดาห์หนังสือแห่งชาติครั้งล่าสุดน่าจะบอกเราได้ว่า นี่คือสิ่งที่คนกลุ่มเล็กๆ กลุ่มหนึ่งต้องการเป็นเจ้าของบันทึกเหตุการณ์ร่วมสมัยในช่วง 2 ปีที่ผ่านมาหลายคนต้องถูกกดอยู่กับความกลัวที่ไม่อนุญาตให้พูดในสิ่งที่เราอยากจะพูดได้เต็มปากเต็มคำ นี่คือความกล้าหาญของไข่แมวและสำนักพิมพ์ประชาไทที่รวบรวมและพิมพ์ผลงานของไข่แมวเล่มนี้ขึ้นมาให้เราได้เก็บไว้เป็นที่ระลึกว่ายุคหนึ่งเราเคยอยู่ในสถานการณ์แบบไหน และทำไมช่วงหนึ่งของการอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศนี้ต้องใช้ความเงียบและเรื่องตลกเป็นเครื่องเยียวยา
