WHEN EAST MEETS WEST IN THE REALM OF HANDICRAFT DESIGN

The development of technology has significantly impacted the way design is created. The Internet has become the main source of references with designers turning to computers as a new working tool, gradually replacing the use of paper while fewer people are needed to maneuver a piece of design work. Unavoidably, design has been perceived as an easy process and many mistakenly understand that technology can entirely replace the value of handmade creations.

VC Fabric is one brand that realizes the value of ‘human hands’ in the design process. Such attempt is showcased through the video capturing the process in which the mesmerizing curtains in the Signature Design by VC Fabric collection are materialized.

The video begins with the most important process – finding a source of inspiration. The design team is particularly interested in the convergence of Eastern and Western cultures, whether it be the Siamese way of life in the era when Western influence was first made tangible through the presence of architectural elements such as the Chino-Portuguese patterns of curved steel panels or the similar aesthetic elements of a Western flower and the Orient’s flora.

The design process continues with sketching and painting executed by human hands including techniques requiring high craftsmanship such as the use of rollers to distribute colors and generate patterns. VC Fabric values the involvement of the human touch in the design process for its appeal and ability to provide an idiosyncratic intricateness that no computer program is able to imitate.

There were four patterns created for the collection. The Siamese Legend picks up on the riverfront way of life in Bangkok during the reign of King Rama V. Inspired by the patterns of cast iron panels, Wara & Cavee stands out for its strong solid lines, which are the result of a coloring technique where a sponge roller is used to create an interesting texture and lessen the solidity of the forms. Hana’s Garden combines the elements of Japanese and French culture through the pattern of Japanese hydrangeas and the hand-woven textile craft of Shiburi, rendering a comfortable and airy vibe to a space with a presence of nature. The magnolia pattern designed and hand-painted with watercolors, Antier, combines the Classic aesthetics of the West with the artistic sensibility of the East.

The premium quality fabric manufactured with certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100 & Bluesign was chosen as the canvas for these beautiful works of art, guaranteeing an environmentally friendly textile product with no harmful substances and ensuring not only aesthetic and functional qualities but also users’ safety and well-being. While every piece of design has its own story, there are times we mistakenly judge a book by its cover. This video will help these amazing works of design better communicate their true value while at the same time bring consumers to realize the integrity and greatness of handcrafted creations.

การพัฒนาของเทคโนโลยีส่งผลเป็นอย่างมากต่อการออกทำงานออกแบบ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการหา reference จากอินเตอร์เน็ต ไปจนถึงกระบวนการทำงานที่ย้ายจากหน้ากระดาษไปบนคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่ก่อนที่ต้องใช้คนจำนวนมากในการทำงานออกแบบสักชิ้นก็ลดลงเหลือแค่ดีไซเนอร์เพียงคนเดียว สิ่งเหล่านี้ทำให้หลายๆ คนคิดไปเองว่าการทำงานออกแบบเป็นเรื่องง่าย และหลายๆ คนลืมหลงคิดไปว่าเทคโนโลยีสามารถมาแทนที่ออร่าของงานฝีมือได้ทั้งหมด

VC Fabric เป็นอีกหนึ่งแบรนด์ที่หันกลับมามองคุณค่าของการทำงานออกแบบด้วย “มือ” และพยายามจะนำเสนอกระบวนการที่ว่านี้ให้เราได้เห็นกันผ่านวิดีโอที่ว่าด้วยขั้นตอนการออกแบบลวดลายผ้าม่านในคอลเล็คชั่น Signature Design by VC Fabric วิดีโอตั้งต้นเรื่องด้วยกระบวนการแรกที่สำคัญที่สุดในการออกแบบนั่นคือการหาแรงบันดาลใจ ครั้งนี้ดีไซเนอร์มองไปที่จุดกึ่งกลางระหว่างวัฒนธรรมตะวันตกและตะวันออก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องราวของวิถีชีวิตและสถาปัตยกรรมของชาวสยามในยุคที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากชาติตะวันตก ลวดลายเหล็กดัดจากสถาปัตยกรรมสไตล์ชิโนโปรตุกีส หรือดอกไม้ตะวันตกที่ให้กลิ่นอายแบบตะวันออก ต่อมาจึงถึงขั้นตอนการสร้างสรรค์ที่เริ่มด้วยจากการสเก็ตช์ เพ้นท์และลงสีด้วยมือทั้งหมด ประกอบกับเทคนิคงานฝีมือต่างๆ เช่น การกลิ้งสี ซึ่ง VC Fabric มองว่ากระบวนการเหล่านี้เป็นเสน่ห์ที่ให้กลิ่นอายของความละเอียดลออและเป็นสิ่งที่โปรแกรมคอมพิวเตอร์ให้ไม่ได้

ลวดลายสำเร็จออกมาเป็นทั้งหมด 4 แบบคือ The Siamese Legend ภาพบรรยากาศชีวิตริมน้ำในกรุงเทพฯ ช่วงรัชกาลที่ 5 Wara & Cavee ที่ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากเหล็กดัด ให้ความรู้สึกแข็งแรง และใช้เทคนิคการกลิ้งสีโดยลูกกลิ้งฟองน้ำ เพื่อให้เกิดเทกเจอร์ของสีที่น่าสนใจและลดความแข็งกระด้างของรูปทรง  Hana’s Garden ที่ผสมผสานวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นเข้ากับฝรั่งเศสผ่านลวดลายดอกไฮเดรนเยียสายพันธุ์ญี่ปุ่น และงานศิลปะผ้าทอพื้นเมืองชิโบริที่ช่วยให้บรรยากาศในห้องโปร่งสบาย และให้ความรู้สึกผ่อนคลายเหมือนได้ใกล้ชิดกับธรรมชาติไปอีกขั้นหนึ่ง และลวดลายสุดท้ายคือ Antier ที่ทีมดีไซเนอร์ออกแบบและเพ้นท์ลวดลายดอกแมกโนเลียด้วยมือด้วยเทคนิคสีน้ำ มีความคลาสิกแบบตะวันตกแต่ผสมผสานกลิ่นอายความเป็นเอเชียได้อย่างมีเสน่ห์

ทั้งหมดนี้ถูกนำเสนอผ่านเนื้อผ้าชั้นดีจากกระบวนการผลิตที่ได้มาตรฐานระดับสากล (Oeko-Tex Standard 100 & Bluesign) ที่รับรองในเรื่องความปลอดภัย ไร้สารตกค้างที่จะเป็นอันตรายต่อคนในครอบครัวและสิ่งแวดล้อม เพื่อให้งานตกแต่งภายในบ้านไม่ใช่แค่สวยงาม แต่ยังไม่มองข้ามเรื่องคุณภาพและความปลอดภัย ทุกๆ งานออกแบบมีเรื่องราวของตัวเอง หลายๆ ครั้ง แค่ด้วยการมองจากระยะไกลทำให้เราเผลอตัดสินทั้งหมดสิ่งๆ นั้นด้วยแค่หน้าปกของมัน เราคิดว่าวิดีโอนี้จะช่วยให้ผลงานสื่อสารคุณค่าของตัวมันเองได้ดีขึ้น และพร้อมๆ กันนั้นก็น่าจะทำให้เราในฐานะคนดูกลับมาตระหนักถึงคุณค่าของงานฝีมืออีกครั้ง
